House Floods Because of Children Clogging Toilets

Clogged toilets are one of the biggest problems facing homeowners that have children. You often find yourself asking, “Why would you stick that in there?” or “How did that end up in the toilet?” These kinds of things never seem to happen when it’s convenient for you to deal with. When it happens knowing what to do can reduce your stress level and help prevent your home from flooding.

Determine What is in the Toilet

One of the first things that you can do is ask all the people living in the house if they have flushed anything suspicious down the toilet. Once you know this you will be able to determine if the object must be physically removed. If not, you may be able to use a chemical to dissolve the clog.

Overflowing Toilet

If your toilet has begun to overflow you will need to turn off the metal switch on the wall by turning it so that it is tight and water cannot flow to the toilet. Then, spread rags around the toilet to soak up any water. You will need to scoop the water out of the toilet bowl using an old pitcher or can leaving just enough to cover the head of a plunger. Completely cover the drain opening with the plunger and then begin plunging to hopefully pull the clog out.

Augers

Augers are something that you can purchase at a hardware store and use to twist and maneuver into the drain hole of the toilet. These are helpful when the plunger doesn’t work to remove the clog. This method is especially effective for toys and other hard items if it can get a hold on the item.

Chemical De-Clogger

Chemicals can be effectively used to dissolve excessive toilet paper, paper towels, wipes, or any other similar items that could be clogging your pipes. Paying more money is usually worth it in this case as the more expensive chemicals have higher concentrations and work harder to dissolve whatever is inside of the pipe. Always use proper protection such as a face mask, goggles, and gloves when handling these chemicals.

Contact Professionals

If none of these things are working to remove the clog, then it is important for you to call professionals ASAP. Sometimes it’s worth it to trust issues like these to the professional plumbers. Should you home have water damage due to the flooding give Water Damage Zone a call today.

Removing Mold from Books

Student thinking

Mold grows in many places often hidden for long periods of time before it gets discovered. It might surprise you to know that mold can also grow inside of books if they are exposed to the right temperature and humidity. If the book has a musty odor to it, there is a good chance it has been exposed to mold.

Identifying Mold

Mold will grow anywhere and on anything as long as there is a source of food and moisture. You will notice spots that look like spider webs or fuzzy. These are mold and they will begin to grow on any porous surface that has organic materials for them to feed on. In books, mold gravitates towards the paper which is easily deteriorated and turned into a food source.

Preventing Mold

Any books that have mold must be removed from your storage and placed in a sealed plastic bag. Humidity must be brought under control in the room where the books are being stored. This may mean moving them to another area or buying a dehumidifier for the room that they are in. This will prevent the mold from getting the moisture it needs to grow and spread. Make sure the room is properly ventilated so mold doesn’t have the chance to rest on things and grow.

Mold Contamination

If you believe that the mold in your books has led to a larger contamination of mold in your home, you will need to call a professional like Water Damage Zone. Large areas of mold should not be dealt with on your own. Professionals are the only ones who have the equipment and knowledge to eliminate large mold infestations and prevent them from occurring again. Remember, you’re saving yourself money in the long-run by eliminating mold the right way, the first time around.

Repairing Ceiling Water Damage

Leak causing mold on ceiling in garage_edited

When your ceiling sustains water damage, it is important for your health and home to fix the problem immediately. If the water damage remains for too long it will lead to mold and the structure of your home will become weaker. Knowing how to address this problem with save you time and money in the future.

Stop the Leak

The source of the leak needs to be stopped before you can begin any work repairing the home. If the leak isn’t repaired, then any water that enters will undo any repair work you may have made.

Dry the Ceiling

After you have sealed the leak, you can begin to dry off the ceiling with towels and a shop vac. It is important that you clean the ceiling from above and below it. This means the flooring/roofing above where the ceiling is located. If there is a bulge in the ceiling this means that there could be water sitting inside the ceiling. In this case use a bucket and knife to puncture the bulge into the bucket. Allow the area to completely dry.

Remove Damaged Ceiling

Pieces of ceiling may be hanging off or bulging out. This needs to be scraped away and smoothed before repairs can be performed. Any flakes or chips should be scraped off as well. The ceiling should be as flat and smooth as possible.

Sand the Ceiling

Now you are going to need to sand the ceiling so that it can be smoothed even more. Small holes can be filled in with joint compound. For bigger holes, you will need to use drywall and plaster to repair them. After these repairs have dried you will need to sand them down so that they are level with the rest of the ceiling.

Paint

Now that you are done with the repairs and everything has dried, you are ready to paint. First apply a coat of primer to the ceiling. After this you will need to let the primer dry and then apply a coat of paint. The best way to do this is to completely paint your whole ceiling so that the color matches and there aren’t any spots.

Removing Water Stains from Wood Furniture

Water leak

When water spill on your wood furniture you may find yourself infuriated at returning the wood to its original color. First you should try to figure out how deep the wood is damaged. The color will tell you about the depth of the stain on your furniture.

Colors of Water Stains

White- a stain made by liquid or steam is usually white or lighter colored. This stain has just penetrated the polished surface of the wood. Just rub this stain with some oil and polish it away.

Darker colors- these stains have penetrated into the deeper layers of the wood and require the help of a professional to repair.

Fixing Light Stains

If you have lighter stains on your wood furniture you can fix them by using various methods. If oil alone doesn’t fix the stain you can also employ the help of baking soda and toothpaste. Mix these together at a 1:1 ratio and rub with a wet cloth on the stain in a circular motion. Do this until the stain has completely disappeared.

Using Solvent

Be careful when using a solvent to remove a stain. First, get an old fabric like a towel and dip it into a solvent while wearing gloves. Squeeze all of the solvent from the towel and rub it on the underside of your wood furniture to test a small area. You want to make sure that it doesn’t discolor your wood. If it works, then you can rub this on the wood until the mark disappears.

Recovering Finish

After removing any water stains, your wood’s finish may have been damaged. In order to restore it you will need to purchase a paste wax for wood and then use a clean towel to apply it to the furniture. Follow the directions on the wax and allow it to sit on your furniture and dry before polishing it off.
