Reasons to remove Dirty Caulk from Bathroom

The appearance of dirty caulk might be enough of a reason for getting rid of it, however it doesn’t just stop there. Dirty caulk also presents health hazards and a spreading medium for mold.

Health Hazards

Rest assured that anything related to mold will have a bad impact on the health of any inhabitants living in its presence. This is one of the primary reasons why you need to get rid of dirty caulk from bathrooms. If the water in a bathtub makes contact with the caulk and your skin at the same time it can definitely create problems such as skin rashes and irritation etc.

Spreading Medium

Dirty caulk has the ability to spread mold across the whole bathroom gradually and effectively. Therefore, it is highly advised to get rid of the dirty caulk as soon as you discover its presence. The sooner the caulk is removed, the more effective the eradication process will be.

Hot Water Heater Leaking?

Home repair

In the course of owning your home, things are going to break or begin leaking.  It is simply a matter of time and inevitability.  Something is going to happen.  One of the most costly things that can happen is when your hot water heater begins to leak.

Normally located in the basement or a service room of the home, the water heater s not noticed as long as the water for dishes stays boiling hot and your showers are not replaced by ice cubes.  However, once the heater begins to leak, it becomes a necessary fix that needs your immediate attention.

In looking at the water heater, one of the first things you’re going to notice is that there is going to be a lot of water coming from the unit.  Remember that these heaters are always full, so there is a lot of water present in the machine once a leak begins.  Next, you will need to identify the origin of the leak.  In the case of Hot water heaters, there is a lot of water and the leak doesn’t stop.  This means that the potential for long-term damage to the home increases the longer the hot water heater is allowed to be given access.  If you think that you have a leak, remember that leaks do not simply start and stop, but they will be fairly consistent.

One of the best ways to find a leak in a hot water heater is to first clean up a puddle.  Once this is done, then take some paper towels and place them in the area of the leak.  It is also necessary to wipe the unit and internal mechanisms down as thoroughly as possible.  This is done to show the origins of the leak.

Once the source of the leak has been discovered, then it is critical to begin the repair.  First, you are going to turn off the water to the appliance.  If the appliance is leaking, why should there be a steady stream of water.  The closing of the water will accommodate this decision.  Don’t forget too to shut off all water to the unit.  Sometimes people forget to turn off the cold water supply.  This can lead to significance and potentially major damage.

Once the water has been shut off from the unit, then it would be time to check all the hoses attached to the unit.  If you find a hose that has some leaking or excessive condensation, then congrats, you have an easy to fix project.  Sometimes it is not this easy. Check the hoses and their connections.  Make sure that these are not the reasons for the leak.  If you are still having a difficult time finding or repairing the leak, call a licensed plumber as soon as possible.

A plumber would be able to quickly diagnose the issue and repair in a timely manner.  Don’t allow yourself to fall into the expensive trap of having to call multiple contractors to fix the heater.  Get it right the first time and enjoy your home as you intended to be.

Preventing Water Damage

Water damage is the most common form of damage in a home.  Prevention of damage can be hard to find, but it does become easier if you are vigilant in looking for the signs.

One of the best practices you can have when owning a home is to understand what happens when something like a broken pipe occurs.  The common reason is simple wear on the pipes.  When coupled with high water pressures, these pipes will eventually fail.  The best practice here is to be proactive in the maintenance of the pipes in your home.  Have them checked regularly and replace as necessary.

When assessing the water damage from appliances, there are devices that are liquid leak detectors.  These devices find leaks and can help you find the areas that are causing the issues for repair.  These can be moderately expensive.  Some of the higher model sensors can actually turn off the water from the appliance minimizing the damage incurred, but these do require plumber and electrician assistance to install.  One of the best things to do with appliance is to schedule regular maintenance checks.  These checks do not take long, and they can save you thousands of dollars in repairs.

In order to protect your home, be proactive and observant.  Just because a room does not have a water source that it is free from water damage.  These room can be damaged from leaky roofs but also water sources above them, such as an upstairs bathroom.  Be sure to check the foundation of the home as well, especially in the Spring months when water tables rise and water can potentially flood your basement.

Finally, one of the best ways to see if a water leak is present is to turn the water off to the home.  Check the outside water meter.  If it continues to move, then water is moving in your house somewhere.  Also, be vigilant with your water bill.  If you notice higher than average water bills without an increased usage on your part, then you may have a leak somewhere on site.

Water damage is a serious issue that many people in the country deal with as it creates damage and thousands of dollars in repairs.  Through a little observance and being proactive, you can check the condition of your home to find problems while they are small.

Water Damage in Commercial Buildings

Couple with contractor

While focusing on water damage and prevention tends to favor the home, it is necessary to be vigilant about the position of commercial buildings as well.  In many cases, commercial buildings have the same risks as private homes.  If left unchecked, water damage in commercial buildings can lead to structural damage and mold.  All of these can contribute to damaging the structure and creating very expensive repairs.

When dealing with large commercial buildings such as warehouses and hotels, it is necessary to continuously inspect the property.  While some would suggest a monthly rotation, it would be most beneficial to inspect the property on a weekly basis.  This could be the job of a department manager.  Inspect the parts of the building that would be most susceptible for moisture buildup.  This would include areas with extensive piping or ceilings.  It is essential to look for drips or other evidence of pooling.   HVAC systems are also areas where inspectors will want to focus their efforts. If there are low-lying areas of the property, such as underground storage or garages, it is essential to make sure that these areas have effective methods of drainage to prevent accumulation of water.  In order to accomplish this, it is necessary to outfit these sections with pumps in case of periods of heavy rain when water may accumulate.

When dealing with water in commercial settings it is essential to develop and adhere to a plan for employees to follow if water damage is found.   A basic plan should be written down and available in a variety of locations for the use of management and employees.  The plans should include training measures so that employees know where to look for common areas of water damage, and if necessary, employees should be knowledgeable of the location and proper procedure for shutting off the water to the building. With all the plans for the guidelines, contact information should be made available for access for maintenance, plumbers, electricians, water clean-up services in order to facilitate the repair of water damage.   The information of the water company and insurance should also be present to make sure that water is cut off and that all damages are assessed for payment if necessary.

The guidelines for response should be kept in a safe location that puts it above the water damage.  The guidelines should also have plans for the relocation of records off-site for their preservation, but also for the temporary halting of operations until the site can be restored.  Once the water damage is repaired, then the commercial building can be opened once more. Maintaining a commercial building can be a tricky endeavor with water damage.  If one remains vigilant in maintaining sight on leaks and sources of water damage, then perhaps large problems can be averted before they become large problems.

Small Leaks Lead to Big Problems

Pretend that you are walking around your home, going about your daily routine when you hear a faint dripping in the background. You try to discover where it’s coming from but to no avail. You check all of the faucets in the home in all of the bathrooms. Even though you’ve checked every room you can’t seem to find it. Eventually, you walk towards the wall next to your bathroom. You put your ear up to it and hear the dripping from within the wall. This is a common occurrence in homes that need some maintenance and shows just how easily a leak can be overlooked and allowed to continue for long periods of time. Well, these leaks may seem small but they cause big problems.

Mold

One of the first things that you should be concerned with is mold. Mold can easily begin to grow from a small leak in your home. The more hidden the leak is, the more likely there is to be mold growth because you won’t be able to see it. Remember, mold likes moist damp places to grow in. It will quickly take hold in these areas and begin to spread throughout the home.

Damage to Drywall

Water will also degrade your drywall. Once it has made contact with the drywall it will begin to absorb into it. Drywall is not water resistant so it will continue absorbing the water which will cause it to morph and degrade until it is in need of replacement. This is why it is important to detect leaks and fix them quickly.

Electrical Wiring Havoc

Any electrical wires or outlets that come into contact with water will become damaged and dangerous for those living in the home. The moisture from a leak is all that is needed for the electrical wiring in your home to go crazy. Water will also flow in your home because of gravity and this will inevitably lead it to places like outlets and wires that you don’t want it to reach.

Structural Destruction

Water will also soak into the structure of your home. This includes the foundation and the flooring. Over time these things will begin to warp and discolor, creating the need for massive overhauls and repairs in order to restore the home to its original condition. Water is also harder to detect in these areas because like inside of your walls, it is hidden from your view.

Pests

Hidden water leaks in your home will also undoubtedly provide pests with the moisture that they need to survive. They will use the water for hydration and also may build their nests around it because it is usually in a hard to see area. Once pests have found a home they will continue to wreak havoc on yours until you find them and eradicate them. Even then, it will be hard to keep them out unless you fix the source of the problem, the leak in your home.

When you have found a leak in a hard to reach area it usually means that it’s time to call professionals like Water Damage Zone. Problems with Hard Water

rusty water tap in ald abandoned house

What is hard water?  This is water that has a high content of minerals such as calcium and magnesium.  It is measured in degrees of 1 to 10 in the number of grains per gallon of water, and we notice it mostly through the spotting on dishes, the results on our hair and physical appearance.

There are many issues that can be created by hard water.  First off, hard water can contribute to clogging pipes and reducing the flow of water.  If you have noticed a white-ish buildup around your shower head and less water or lower pressure then hard water is working in the pipes.  This can lead to a buildup of film on bathroom surfaces which over time can be difficult to clean off. In the shower, hard water leaves your skin feeling as if there is a soapy film and residue that cannot come off.  It results in the skin feeling dry.  Hair cannot be rinsed properly resulting in shampoo residue leaving your hair looking dull.

For the appliances in the home, hard water can be difficult for any appliance using water to process.  It can shorten the life of refrigerators that offer water and ice cubes by accumulating in tubes and pipes.  More importantly, hard water can negatively impact your water heater through clogging pipes, but also by needing more heat for water as hard water is a poor conductor of heat.  This results in higher water and energy bills. Finally, the quality of your food can be affected by hard water.  When cleaned, glasses will retain a spotting and film on them that is difficult to remove and can influence the taste of the beverage.  Clothes also suffer hard water damage as they can be worn down by the presence of the extra minerals in the wash cycle.

What can you do?  One of the best things that you can do to combat hard water in your home is to install a water softener.  A water softener adds salts into the water through the process of ion exchange.  When hard water is filtered through the water softener filled with negative charged resin, the calcium and magnesium in hard water, which carries a positive charge, attaches to the beads which leaves the sodium in the water.  Sodium is exchanged for the calcium and magnesium turning hard water soft. When dealing with your water softener, make sure that you are constantly adding salt to the basin of the water softener.  This will ensure that the filtration process is always able to occur as it should.

If you choose to live with your hard water, then you should look into reducing the heat in the water heater to save on the life of the appliance.  Preventative flushing of the unit can also help its longevity and performance.  Use vinegar to remove white spots and on tiles, glass in the bathroom to remove mineral deposits.  Look for laundry soap and shampoo that are designed for hard water.
