Mold in Gyms

Macro mold colonies

When you are working out, it is in an attempt to re-shape your body.  In this process, it is natural to break a sweat as the body begins the change that routine exercise can provide. However, there is something that also wants you to exert sweat because your sweat is as good for it as the exercise is for you.  That something is mold, and the gym, whether it is the local gym or the one in your home is a perfect breeding ground for mold.

Let’s begin by stating that mold and mold spores are everywhere.  They travel on air currents looking for a suitable place to land and begin to grow.  In most cases, molds prefer areas with access to moisture, humidity and consistently warm temperatures for optimum growth. The gym is the perfect environment for mold, because all of the conditions that mold seek are present there.  The temperatures are constantly in a warmer range promoting mold growth.  There is moisture in the air from the heating and cooling systems, but also from the sweat being exerted in addition to the basic moisture in the exhaling of people working out.  This moisture can create a base humidity that mold can thrive in.

Where would mold grow in a gym?  First off, it can grow anywhere.  With people working out, it can grow on the machines that are being used, particularly if these are not being wiped down or disinfected regularly.  There is a possibility that you could be using a machine that has mold growing on and in it. Also, the showers and sauna rooms of gyms can be prime breeding grounds for mold.  With the constant moisture that is in and splashed outside of the areas, mold can take hold anywhere.  These areas should be consistently and regularly disinfected along mold cleaning standards to limit the growth of mildew and mold. Since many gyms are large open structures similar to warehouses, sometimes leaks can occur in the plumbing and in areas that are not regularly examined.  Building checks should be conducted on a regular basis to prevent the development and growth of mold.

Will the mold make you sick?  There is potential for that, but it depends on the mold.  In many cases, mold can trigger respiratory ailments such as wheezing, shortness of breath and asthma.  While not always fatal, the presence of mold can severely limit your ability to achieve fitness, particularly if you are looking to improve your cardio.  In other cases, molds can trigger severe reactions that will require medical assistance and hospitalization, but these are usually dependent on extreme cases and issues with the respiratory system.Mold is present in every aspect of our lives, and in most cases we have learned to live with it.  In the gym, mold has the potential to grow rapidly.  Make sure that if you use the gym to wipe the machines down after you use them and wear slippers into and out of the shower/sauna rooms to limit the affect of mold on your body.

Sewage Water Backup

shutterstock_85009870

Whether you own your home or you rent, there are few things that can occur in your home that are more traumatic and quite frankly horrible than a sewer water backup.  These not only possess the stress of water damage, but they also have added rankness of waste water that makes it a true double whammy.

So how does the sewer water backup occur?  They happen for many reasons.  You can have tree roots in your lines, an aging sewer system, combined and blocked pipes.  Whatever the cause, when it occurs, it is tough to deal with. How do tress affect the pipelines?  As your home ages and depending on the age of the home, the home can settle placing stress on the pipes.  These stresses can create cracks which seep water.  As trees and shrubs seek water sources, they can find their roots can find ways into the roots creating blockages.  As more and more roots enter the pipes, there is nowhere for the water to go, so you have a water backup.

Aging sewer systems also play a role in sewer water backups.  With the sewer systems in the United States being on average over 35 years old, this means that there are sewer lines that are potentially upwards of 50-60 years old.  This leads to clogs and simple breakdowns from time resulting in waste and sewer water backup. Combined pipes become an issue when the pipes are responsible for removing both sewer and rainwater.  The lines might become overloaded and backup as a result.  It is always best to stay away from combined pipes if you are able.

Where does sewer water backup?  The short answer is that it backs up in the lowest point in the house.  This is usually the basement, and from experience, it can be a difficult and messy cleanup. How do you keep the drains open?  One of the best ways to keep the lines open is to have an annual inspection of the lines by a company that can assess the quality of the lines and clear blockages if necessary.  This will keep your lines running smoothly, cleanly and most importantly quickly into the municipal water system.

Most importantly, be careful what you are putting down your drains and toilets.  Remember that just because it goes down the kitchen drain or goes down the toilet that it is magically out of your life.  Items and sludge can accumulate in the drain and pipes which over time will create back ups.  Be smart with what goes down the pipes.

What Causes Water Damage ?

Water Damage.jpg

Water damage can happen because of many different scenarios. It begins when water starts building up in an area that it doesn’t belong. This is why it is important to routinely check your home for leaks and other issues that can allow water to begin to collect. If you do this and take precautionary measures you can save yourself a lot of money and hassle.

Clogged and Backed Up Pipes
If plumbing issues happen inside of your walls they are usually hard to detect. Having clogged or backed up pipes can put pressure on them and cause them to burst. Old pipes may even have plants that begin to grow through them and cause major leaks. It is important to figure out if this is a problem that you are having because it can turn bad quickly.

Areas Prone to Water Damage
Attics, basements, and any crawl spaces in the home are going to be more likely to have water damage because they are more exposed to the outside world. The best thing to do with these areas is to check them regularly for any condensation, mold, or leaks. Knowing if there is a problem quickly will help you in delaying the damage from spreading and costing you large amounts of money to repair.

Broken Appliances
Some of the appliances in your home will break down and stop performing the way that they were meant to. This means that pipes will rust and crack and other parts will deteriorate. Once this happens water can begin to leak from things and cause unknown damage behind them or underneath of them. Things such as HVACs (heating, ventilating and air conditioning units) can also cause moisture to build up if they are not regularly maintained.

Natural Disasters and Weather
This is one thing that you have no control over. To prevent damage from natural disasters and weather events the best thing that you can do is to take preventative measures to minimize any damage they will cause to your home. When any disaster or weather emergency happens it is important to have an emergency plan to escape safely from your home. By thinking ahead you can take steps to prevent damage to your home and belongings by preparing for any possible weather-related issues that happen to your home. Always remember that if the damage is too extensive for you to handle on your own, it is best to call professionals like Water Damage Zone, who are certified and experienced in quickly handling issues like these.

How Long to Perform a Dry Out for Mold

Doing a dry out for mold is important but not always something that people know about and understand. Keep in mind that controlling the humidity in the home will help with a mold problem but it will not eliminate it completely. The humidity in the home should be around 50% or less for mold to become inactive. This means that it will stop it from growing and it won’t get any worse. Keep this humidity for as long as possible and especially while you are taking the time to eradicate the mold from your home. There are more steps to eliminating your mold after reducing the humidity.

Vapor Steam Cleaner

A good thing to use at this point to eliminate your mold problem is a vapor steam cleaner. This steam cleaner will use dry vapor that gets up to between 180 and 220 degrees Fahrenheit. This temperature range is high enough to actually kill the mold and this works on most kinds of mold. There are some types that are heat resistant and may actually become dormant and not die from this method.

Tea Tree Oil

A combination of tea tree oil and water can be used by spraying it on top of the mold. Use this combination at a mixture of 2 teaspoons of tea tree oil for every 2 cups of water. Apply it to all of the mold in the location. This will work to kill off most mold in areas like the shower, bathroom, and kitchen where you don’t want to use harsh chemicals in case you accidentally ingest or inhale them.

White Vinegar

White vinegar in a bottle has been known to eliminate mold on contact. Just buy your white vinegar and pour it directly into a spray bottle. Then spray it directly onto moldy areas and let it dry. The smell will be strong but when used repeatedly and allowed to dry completely, the results will be good. Vinegar is another good alternative for those of us who are harmful to chemicals or just being cautious for their own health and well-being.

Call Professionals for Big Mold Problems

While the methods listed above work for small mold problems that pop up from time to time, they will not work on larger areas with mold damage. These problem areas will need an expert’s touch. Only hire companies like Water Damage Zone, who are certified in mold removal, and will treat your property with the utmost care. We have an expert team of professionals who ensure that the problem is solved quickly and with proper care to a customer’s personal property.

How to Save Water in Continued Southern California Drought

Water dripping from faucet

Southern California has been in a drought for a long time and residents have accepted dealing with it as a way of life. So the problem of water shortage isn’t going away any time soon. It’s time to get smarter about how you conserve water. Here’s some tips for saving water in case you forgot.

Stop Watering Grass

Over half of water use in people’s home occurs outdoors on their lawns. Lawns will use about 57 inches of rain every year, while most lawns in Los Angeles only get 15 inches a year. By replacing your lawn with alternative substrates that don’t require water, you will save a lot of money on water as well as protecting the environment. If you really can’t part with your grass, there are more water friendly varieties that don’t consume as much. Succulents are especially good for landscaping because they barely need any water to grow.

Conserving in the Bathroom

Most homes in California use about 192 gallons of water every day. One way to combat this is to take shorter showers. Aim for about 5 minutes, if you can do this one thing every day it will add up. Also, turn off the faucet while you’re brushing your teeth or shaving. Fixing worn washers in dripping faucets will also save you about 350 gallons of water every month.

Cleaning and Saving Water

Instead of using a hose to clean off your driveway and sidewalks, try using a broom instead. This will save you a bunch of water. Installing a more water efficient washing machine will save you plenty of water as well as cleaning your clothing better. Soak your pots and pans before scrubbing them so the water doesn’t have to run while you clean.

Be Conscious

Pay attention when you turn water on anywhere in your home and don’t let it continue to run for a long period of time. This will make you more conscious of how much water you are using. If the water seems like it’s running for a long time, then there is probably something that you can do to speed the process up or do some of the task without using water. Saving water is not only important to our environment but also to your water bill.

Dry Rot Tips and Prevention

IMG_0922

It is likely that you have encountered wood outside that has been the victim of dry rot. Dry rot is the result of wood that has been infected with a fungus. It starts by digesting things in the wood that give it structure and support. The wood tends to be drier and you will notice it is lighter if you pick it up.

Causes of Dry Rot

One of the first things that happens in the development of dry rot is that the wood comes into contact with moisture. While the wood is wet the fungus will begin to grow inside of it. Dry rot fungus will continue to eat away at wood until it disintegrates.

Appearance

Many people confuse the appearance of dry rot with that of carpenter ant or termite damage. The major difference here is that ants and termites will remove the wood to specifically form areas where they live. If you definitely have termites, you will notice that your wood has termites inside of it and eggs or termite droppings outside of holes in the wood.

Prevention

One of the best ways you can stop dry rot from happening in your home is by stopping excess moisture. You can do this in many ways such as fixing leaky plumbing or a hole that is allowing water to contact the wood in your home. If the wood is contacting soil it has an increased chance of becoming wet and growing the fungus.

Treating Wood

Many times it is inevitable that water will come into contact with wood. These wooden areas should be treated so that fungus cannot grow in them. Borate is a commonly used fungicide that will help prevent dry rot in the wood on your home. It can also be used to prevent insects from infesting the wood. Wood can be treated whenever you like and should be done regularly to increase its effectiveness.

Wood Restoration

If dry rot has gotten the best of your home and you can’t simply treat the wood to solve the problem, you will need to replace the damaged areas. Damaged wood can be replaced by companies like Water Damage Zone who are experienced at restoring homes from water damage. Wooden areas commonly need to be replaced after excessive damage has occurred. Professionals will help you restore your home if you are dealing with large amounts of dry rot.
