My Basement is flooded, what should I do?

There are many times in a homeowner’s life that they may find that their basement has become flooded. A basement is commonly flooded when there are instances of excessive rainfall, if snow melts too quickly, when pipes and drains become blocked or simply by water seeping in from the outside.

Unfortunately, a flooded basement has the power to cause massive amounts of damage to the structural integrity of the entire home and it is important that homeowners get the area dry quickly in order to prevent this damage from occurring. If you ever find your basement flood, it is important that you take the following steps in order to save yourself money in related repairs.

Drain the Basement

The first and most important thing that you will need to do is to get all the water out of your basement. This is likely to take some time and effort in order to get all the water out of your basement. It may also be a good idea to purchase a portable pump to help remove the water from your basement at your local hardware store. Make sure that you purchase one that fits with the size of your basement.

Mop your Basement

After you have removed the water from your basement, you will need to mop up the remaining water from the floor. It will be impossible to remove all the water with a pump and removing all of it is important so that you do not risk mold growing in your basement. It is also a good idea to mop with a disinfectant as well so that you will be able to remove any smell of mildew that may be present at this point.

Dry the Basement

Finally, you will eed to begin the drying out process as quickly as possible. The longer water remains in your basement, the more chance that you have of developing mold or structural issues due to the water. In order to completely remove all the water from the basement, you should purchase a dehumidifier.

Categories Of Water Damage

This will help you to remove all the water from the basement as well as any unpleasant smells as well. Make sure that you are keeping an eye on the water level in your dehumidifier and empty it so that your basement does not flood again.

Conclusion

Make sure that you are careful when drying out your basement when it comes to electrical equipment that may be plugged in at the time of the flood. You should never touch anything that is plugged in and wet because you may risk an electrical shock.

For any major flooding it may be best to enlist the help of a professional so that the structural integrity of your home is protected the best. A professional will be able to assess the damage that has already been created and help determine the steps that are necessary to help prevent any further damage from occurring before the issue had been corrected.

What to Do When Your Sewer Line Clogs

Situation Degraded

Clogs in sewer lines can remain undiscovered for long periods of time, while still causing a lot of damage to a home. Many homeowners already understand the purpose of sewer lines in their homes. Even with this knowledge, many sewer lines go unchecked for long periods of time. This allows the necessary time for a clog to develop.

What Happens?

When your sewer line is backed up it can lead to raw sewage coming back out of drains in your home. This can lead to lots of damage to the home and require sewer line repair or replacement to fix the problem at its root. Understanding what to look for in the case of a sewer clog is important in stopping the problem before it gets worse.

What to Look For

If any of your drains in the home or toilets are backing up or you hear a gurgling sound in your drains, it’s a sign that you have a clog in your sewage line. If any appliances are connected to the water line, you will notice weird noises coming from other connected rooms. There is one main branch that has many smaller branches coming off of it. If there is a clog in the main one, you will notice problems starting to occur in the rest of them.

Causes of Sewage Line Clogs

Many homeowners are surprised to discover that the ultimate cause of their sewage clog is a tree root. Tree roots work their way through broken drains, sometimes even crushing them completely. If you notice that your drains flow slowly it is commonly because of tree roots. Some other causes of clogged sewage lines are flushed hygiene products, paper towels, and thick toilet papers.

What to Do?

If you notice the symptoms of a sewage line clog, call Water Damage Zone (Los Angeles, CA), at (877) 520-1923 to get professionals out to your home right now. It is important to begin work immediately since a clogged sewage line can continue to cause more damage to your home.

What Causes Mold Growth in Homes

Bathroom Renovations

In homes, mold is very prevalent, and it can grow anywhere.  One of the things that mold usually prefers is humid, damp and warm environments to the do the most growing.  This is why mold tends to develop and grow in bathrooms, kitchens, attics and other places that meet these criteria.  Mold can also grow in the cool parts of the home where condensation is constant, such as the basement.  Mold can have differing effects on people from respiratory illness to severe reaction that might require hospitalization.  If you find that you have a mold issue, get it sorted out quickly and professionally using a professional and certified mold remediation service for the best results.

Before mold can effectively grow in your home, it does need some conditions to be met first.

First off, mold reproduces through a spore process.  When mold matures, it creates seeds or spores that are microscopic, but are very easy to shake from the original mold colony.  These spores exist all throughout nature and they are easy to bring into your home.  Once inside your home, they can grow if the other conditions are met, and they can spread quickly throughout the home.

Second, mold needs a food source to draw nutrients from.  Like any organic material, mold needs to feed.  Mold can feed on a variety of materials present in any home.  Wood, drywall, cotton clothing, dust, even your skin can become a source of nutrients for mold.  Regular cleaning can help alleviate the nutrients from mold’s use.

Darkness and warmth are the next needs for mold growth.  This is why mold will tend to grow in locations of the house which has a steady temperature and darkness.  Ultraviolet light is not conducive for mold growth.  Tend to explore the basement of the home for mold and where it may be growing.

This might seem like a no-brainer, but mold also needs oxygen to live and thrive.  Mold is an organic being like you, and you need oxygen to live.  So does mold.  No organic life form can live in a vacuum devoid of oxygen, so if you can live in your home, then so can mold.

Finally, the last two conditions for mold to grow in the home are presence of moisture and time.  Mold likes to grow in humid and moist locations in the home.  This is why kitchens, bathrooms, and basements are prime locations for mold.  They offer the consistent presence of water that mold needs to feed on in addition to food sources.  The more humidity and moisture present, then the better chances there are for mold growth.

Mold also needs time to grow.  Left unchecked, mold can grow very quickly in the home.  Within two days, mold can begin to accumulate through the home, and within a week you will notice health issues.  Make sure that you care routinely checking and cleaning for mold to keep the issue in check.

Hazardous Sewage Cleanup

shutterstock_210206230

Sewers overflowing is a cause of dangerous health threats to humans and animals. Sewage backups can occur indoors or outdoors and should be cleaned up as quickly as possible to avoid any health risks. Sewage not only contains harmful substances, but it also is a liquid so it dissolves things as well as soaking into them, making it hard to completely remove.

Deadly Water

Sewage is deadly water that can travel back up through your toilets or sinks. This water houses millions of germs and bacteria that will wreak havoc on your immune system. In the event of this happening you will need to act quickly and remove yourself and anyone else from being exposed to these dangerous contaminants. The water can seep into carpets as well as vents and drywall in your home. It is important that you seek help for this situation as soon as possible to return your home to a normal, safe state.

Dangers of Sewage

Sewage is not only disgusting but it contains many foul substances. Amongst these is fecal matter that will float around in your home carrying all sorts of bacteria and parasites that you won’t want to encounter. Other things you may encounter are objects that shouldn’t have ended up in the sewer in the first place. Things like hair, grease, garbage, or even wet wipes. Sewers can back up due to many reasons: plant roots growing through pipes, obstructions from foreign objects, or even structural damage to the pipes that has occurred over time.

Damage From Water

Water damage in your home or business can have an immediate impact on the possessions you own, and it can be a very daunting experience to work through.  In a matter of minutes, a lifetime’s worth of accumulated memories can be lost.

Whether it is from a burst pipe, leaking roof or other entry point, water can move very quickly through your home, and it can permanently damage the items it comes in contact with.  As water moves, it comes into contact with multiple areas which in turn can make insurance assessment and costs higher.  Water can also form what are known as transfer stains on wood and metal through the home, furniture can be damaged and wallpaper can begin to warp and split.  This can all happen in minutes after the water leak begins.

If the water leak is allowed to continue for hours, then your furniture will then begin to absorb water, warp and split.  Drywall and other finished building materials will begin to show the effects of water as it begins to become mushy as it absorbs the water.  Metal can begin to tarnish and show the early stages of rusting.  Odors in the home will become more acute and mold can begin to form.

If the water leak is allowed to proceed for days, this becomes the most drastic and costly stages of water damage.  As the water begins to have detritus float in it, it becomes known as grey water.  This term means that the water is slightly polluted, but not to the point of being black water which is infused with higher amounts of sewage.  Care still needs to be used when cleaning grey water as it can still pose health issues.  You will want to follow strict guidelines for disposing of items impacted with this kind of water damage for your safety.  Building materials will begin to crumble and waste away, and rust begins on uncoated materials.  Treated materials in the home will begin to warp and split.  Electric components will malfunction.  Finally, fungus will begin to appear around the home resulting in the need for mold remediation.

In the course of water damage in the home, it is always best to act immediately to find a solution to the cause and save any items potentially affected by the water.   The longer you wait, the higher your costs will be to repair your home.  If you act quickly through your own actions or by contacting a water removal specialist, then you can have your home back again.

Mold in The Washer and Dryer

When you wash your clothes, it is a reasonable expectation that your clothes will be clean and ready for use.  We all look forward to the fresh smell of clothes when they emerge from the washer and dryer, but what if your clothes weren’t as clean as you hoped?  With mold potentially in the washer and dryer, your clothes might need to be washed again once the mold issue has been resolved.

Mold is incredibly pervasive, and it gets everywhere in your home.  We hope that washing machines and dryers provide us a safe haven from mold, but the recent court hearings of the past few years show that concerns about mold need to extend to washing machines and dryers as well.

Mold can be very detrimental to your health if you allow it to go unchecked.  It feeds on dust and moisture, and it reproduces by spores.  All of these can be present when we do laundry.  When clothes come from the washer, they can still contain particles and provide the moisture needed for mold growth.  The spores of mold are very durable and can withstand extreme heat and cold, and when you wear your favorite outfits, you could be spreading mold spores throughout your home.  This would raise your risk of wheezing, coughing, allergies, and potential for asthma in severe cases.

While washers and dryers can contain mold, there are some easy ways to help mitigate the mold issue.  First, wipe the machine dry when you are done with your laundry.  By removing moisture, you are depriving mold a key ingredient that it needs to grow.  You can also clean the detergent dispenser at least twice a month to prevent a buildup that could feed mold.  If your laundry room is damp, you may wish to run a dehumidifier in order to remove extra moisture from the air.  Keep your washer open when not in use in order to keep air circulating in the unit to air-dry any moisture you may have missed.

If you do the above on a regular basis, it is possible to minimize the impact of mold in your laundry room and home.  However, there are instances where mold grows, and it is necessary to call in a professional remediation.  Be sure to save all your warranty paperwork, but mold remediation professionals can help identify and solve mold issues in your home.  Being certified and knowledgeable in the most recent and up-to-date practices, these services can get it right quickly so you are sure that your items are clean when they are washed.

Problems with Hard Water

rusty water tap in ald abandoned house

What is hard water?  This is water that has a high content of minerals such as calcium and magnesium.  It is measured in degrees of 1 to 10 in the number of grains per gallon of water, and we notice it mostly through the spotting on dishes, the results on our hair and physical appearance.

There are many issues that can be created by hard water.  First off, hard water can contribute to clogging pipes and reducing the flow of water.  If you have noticed a white-ish buildup around your shower head and less water or lower pressure then hard water is working in the pipes.  This can lead to a buildup of film on bathroom surfaces which over time can be difficult to clean off. In the shower, hard water leaves your skin feeling as if there is a soapy film and residue that cannot come off.  It results in the skin feeling dry.  Hair cannot be rinsed properly resulting in shampoo residue leaving your hair looking dull.

For the appliances in the home, hard water can be difficult for any appliance using water to process.  It can shorten the life of refrigerators that offer water and ice cubes by accumulating in tubes and pipes.  More importantly, hard water can negatively impact your water heater through clogging pipes, but also by needing more heat for water as hard water is a poor conductor of heat.  This results in higher water and energy bills. Finally, the quality of your food can be affected by hard water.  When cleaned, glasses will retain a spotting and film on them that is difficult to remove and can influence the taste of the beverage.  Clothes also suffer hard water damage as they can be worn down by the presence of the extra minerals in the wash cycle.

What can you do?  One of the best things that you can do to combat hard water in your home is to install a water softener.  A water softener adds salts into the water through the process of ion exchange.  When hard water is filtered through the water softener filled with negative charged resin, the calcium and magnesium in hard water, which carries a positive charge, attaches to the beads which leaves the sodium in the water.  Sodium is exchanged for the calcium and magnesium turning hard water soft. When dealing with your water softener, make sure that you are constantly adding salt to the basin of the water softener.  This will ensure that the filtration process is always able to occur as it should.

If you choose to live with your hard water, then you should look into reducing the heat in the water heater to save on the life of the appliance.  Preventative flushing of the unit can also help its longevity and performance.  Use vinegar to remove white spots and on tiles, glass in the bathroom to remove mineral deposits.  Look for laundry soap and shampoo that are designed for hard water.
