Mold in The Washer and Dryer

When you wash your clothes, it is a reasonable expectation that your clothes will be clean and ready for use.  We all look forward to the fresh smell of clothes when they emerge from the washer and dryer, but what if your clothes weren’t as clean as you hoped?  With mold potentially in the washer and dryer, your clothes might need to be washed again once the mold issue has been resolved.

Mold is incredibly pervasive, and it gets everywhere in your home.  We hope that washing machines and dryers provide us a safe haven from mold, but the recent court hearings of the past few years show that concerns about mold need to extend to washing machines and dryers as well.

Mold can be very detrimental to your health if you allow it to go unchecked.  It feeds on dust and moisture, and it reproduces by spores.  All of these can be present when we do laundry.  When clothes come from the washer, they can still contain particles and provide the moisture needed for mold growth.  The spores of mold are very durable and can withstand extreme heat and cold, and when you wear your favorite outfits, you could be spreading mold spores throughout your home.  This would raise your risk of wheezing, coughing, allergies, and potential for asthma in severe cases.

While washers and dryers can contain mold, there are some easy ways to help mitigate the mold issue.  First, wipe the machine dry when you are done with your laundry.  By removing moisture, you are depriving mold a key ingredient that it needs to grow.  You can also clean the detergent dispenser at least twice a month to prevent a buildup that could feed mold.  If your laundry room is damp, you may wish to run a dehumidifier in order to remove extra moisture from the air.  Keep your washer open when not in use in order to keep air circulating in the unit to air-dry any moisture you may have missed.

If you do the above on a regular basis, it is possible to minimize the impact of mold in your laundry room and home.  However, there are instances where mold grows, and it is necessary to call in a professional remediation.  Be sure to save all your warranty paperwork, but mold remediation professionals can help identify and solve mold issues in your home.  Being certified and knowledgeable in the most recent and up-to-date practices, these services can get it right quickly so you are sure that your items are clean when they are washed.

Pouring Grease in Your Sink Damages Your Drains

If you cook any foods with high fat on your stove, like bacon, then you are often left with a greasy residue in the pan when you’re done. These fats are liquid when hot but turn solid when they return to room temperature. When you keep pouring them down the drain they eventually solidify and clog your pipes up.

How Grease Damages

When the grease goes down the drain it is able to slide some of the way down. As it goes down it starts to solidify. Eventually, if you keep doing this the grease will completely coat the insides of your pipes. When this happens it’s only a matter of time before something completely clogs the pipe so that water can’t flow through it. Getting a drain properly fixed may be costly but it will be far less money than dealing with a water damage disaster because your pipes have burst.

Emergency Drain Repair

If you have just poured a little grease down your drain and you don’t know what to do, don’t worry. All you have to do is heat up a pot of boiling water and pour it down your drain. This helps to liquefy the grease so it can flow out of the pipe. Other things that can help with this are baking soda and vinegar that not only break down grease, but eliminate odors.

How to Tell if Your Drain is Clogged with Grease

Your drain is most likely clogged if your sink is draining slowly, has a gurgling sound, or a bad smell that won’t go away. If boiling water doesn’t solve your problem, it’s time to call water damage professionals who can replace your damaged pipes. It is important to consistently clean your drains with boiling water so that they don’t clog and overflow.

Should You Finish Your Basement?

An unfinished basement can be a project that adds value and purpose to a home, but is it right for every home?  Perhaps the basement is just being used as storage or it just has an old feeling.  Maybe it has already been finished, and it just needs a new direction and touched up.  Whatever you choose, finishing a basement can be a great decision for a home.

The first decision that should be considered is the cost of the project.  The basement remodeling cost is going to depend on the size and dimensions of the basement, types of rooms that are being created, materials selected, the location of the home in the country and the overall housing market.  Intensive additions like kitchens and bathrooms are great, but these will still add more to the overall cost of the job.  You can expect to spend roughly $50 per square foot to finish your basement, and this estimate would rise depending on the materials and intent of the remodeling.

 The Pros

Why should you finish your basement?  The first reason is to increase the living space of the home.  In many cases, this can actually be cheaper than having an addition to the home.  These rooms can fulfill many different functions such as a living area, bar or even a play area for children.  One of the greatest benefits of the finished basement is that it can become an area separate from the rest of the home and noises outside.  It can give the illusion of being removed when you are still in the middle of everything.  In the reverse, if you want your children to be as loud as they want, then the basement is a great place for a play area.

 The Cons

What are the cons to finishing a basement?  First, the price of the project can be expensive.  Having a finished basement is great, but if you have leaks in your basement then you have a potential for a bigger repair issue than the investment is worth.  The basement also takes time to finish.  In order to make the basement ready for finishing, then you will need to potentially move appliances such as the furnace and water heater.  You will need to have the foundation checked and leveled.  These are among many other things.  It could be weeks before a basement is finished.  Finally, the potential investment return is a potential con.  You can make more money on your home’s value for less money if you look at remodeling the bathroom, kitchen, adding a room than a basement remodel.  If you are looking to sell quickly, then this kind of project is not ideal for you.

 Be Prepared

If you commit to the basement finish then take some time beforehand, and figure out exactly what you want with the room.  If you want a leisure area, kids playroom then it is best to know this in the early stages.  Knowing the square footage of the basement will let you understand what you can do.  Remember that larger basements will offer more opportunities, but understanding the space will further allow for a proper finish.  You want to make sure that you set a budget.  Don’t put yourself in debt over this.  Wait until you can afford it.  The greatest point is to be very comfortable with your contractor.  Do your research and get multiple bids, and select your contractor wisely.  Make sure that you and they can work together to make your ideas a reality.

Advantages of Natural Cleaning Solutions

In the 21st Century, it is a common belief among many people that it is the responsibility of people to be more careful in terms of their impact on the planet.  With over 7 billion people currently on Earth, it is believed that, as a species, we are rapidly approaching conditions where the planet is under immense stress.  As a result, the green cleaning industry is taking off.

In addition to the idea of responsibility, green cleaning solutions truly offer better and safer ways to keep your home clean.  One of the first benefits of the green solutions is that it is not as hard on the planet.  Pollution is limited in the home by two to five times less than compared to levels outside of the home.  This creates an environment that is more serene and conducive for your lifestyle.  One issue with cleaners is that people tend to dispose of cleaners down a drain.  These cleaners have the potential to end up in the water supply.  Rivers and lakes can be polluted to the point of polluting the drinking water.  Green products are not harsh as the chemicals leading to lesser pollution in the water table and a healthier environment of plant and animal life.

Finally, the use of these green solutions does not require petroleum to be used.  Petroleum is a common resource that we do not understand how pervasive it is in our lives.  When we mention petroleum, we think mainly of gas for our cars and homes and maybe petroleum jelly.  However, petroleum is common in our lives as it is fundamental in the creation of various plastics, medications, toothpaste, nylon, adhesives, detergents, trash bags.  The list that contains petroleum is quite extensive, and it is important to remember that this is a finite resource.

Plus, the health of the user is not as impacted as using the harsh chemicals in the past.   Green cleaning products can significantly reduce the number of eye and skin irritation.  Allergic reactions are also minimized by using these products.  This benefit is mainly seen through the limitation of the chemicals entering the lungs and then entering the bloodstream.

One of the best incentives for using green solutions is that the cost for using these green solutions is cheaper than the cleaning products that were produced with chemicals.  The chemicals have to go through a multiple refining process in order to make them suitable for a particular product.  Green solutions are easier in that they do not have the levels of refining to create a finished product.  This results in manufacturers producing more green solutions bringing the prices down for the consumer leading to more being sold in the marketplace.

Finally, the use of green solutions are better for people than constantly using antibacterials.  Some bacteria is good for people, and through the overuse of antibacterials, good bacteria are eliminated, but there is also a fear that stronger bacteria are being created that withstand the antibacterial nature of soap.  It might be healthier to use green solutions here.

As more and more people come to live on Earth, it becomes our duty to take better care of the world around.  Through using green products and solutions, we take an immediate step in our homes to make the environment better and lead better lives overall.

The Dangers of Hiking in Rain

Rainfall

Sometimes it rains and you don’t want to cancel your hiking plans so you go anyway. This can be dangerous and without proper planning can end in you or your hiking companions getting injured. The following are some tips for properly hiking when it rains outside.

Waterproofing

Make sure that you use waterproof clothing such as raincoats and other gear that will allow rain to slide off of you instead of soaking into your clothing. Once your clothing gets wet it will often stay wet. This will subject your body to colder temperatures and increase your chances of coming down with an illness. If you only have a bag that isn’t waterproof, you can use a garbage bag as a liner so that the insides don’t get wet. In waterproof clothing it is important that it has some form of ventilation so that you can let heat and moisture escape.

Bring Layers

In warmer climates it may be nice to walk in the rain without a lot of gear on. However, if the weather changes or the sun starts to set you can become cold quickly. Put some more layers on such as sweatshirts and other clothing to keep your body heat in. If it is still somewhat warm out you’re going to want to hike at a slower pace so that you don’t overheat.

Taking Breaks

If you’re hiking in the rain, breaks become an important time to regroup and store up some energy. If the rain lets up, use this time as a break. During your break make sure to eat and drink to replace anything you’ve burnt off during your hike. This is also a good time to get anything out of your bags that you may need but don’t want to get wet.

Keep Your Feet Dry

Rain pants are an important item in preventing water from finding its way into your shoes. They will direct the water past your legs and over the outside of your boots. Making sure that you also have waterproof boots that are designed for the climate that you are hiking in is important. They need to have enough traction so that they won’t slip on rocks that are wet from the rain.

Wet Socks

Make sure to pack dry socks so that if you are hiking for an extended period of time you can exchange them with your wet ones. Wet socks can cause a variety of foot problems including various foot fungi and blisters. If you have a break in the weather where it is dry you will want to take off your wet socks and hang them from a tree branch so that they can begin to dry in the sun. When you get ready to start hiking put them in a plastic bag so they won’t get the other things in your bag wet.

Rock Slides

The risk of a rock slide or even land side are extremely high during the rain. Water loosens the mountains and mud making the land more likely to slide out from underneath you. This is never something you can predict as there are many factors that could be added to the problem to make it more likely. Your own body weight might be the very thing that piece of land needed to fall. Take extra precaution by trying to stick to roads and not venturing off on new trails. Or you can take the even safer route of waiting till the rains ends and the land has time to dry.

Kitchen Water Damage

For being a central part of the home with a lot of daily activity, there are many different areas of the home’s kitchen that can incur water damage.  The most common areas for water damage in a kitchen would be the sink, refrigerator and the  dishwasher in the room.  Much of the damage that you will experience will result from the rotting of wood near the water with a higher chance for mold depending on the length of time the water damage is allowed to remain.

??????????????

The Kitchen Sink

The first area to examine is the kitchen sink.  Remember, leaks are common under a kitchen sink.  The most common reasons for leaks are water supply valves, faucets and drainpipes.  If these leaks are allowed to continue, they can cause significant damage to the floor and inside of cabinets through wood rot, warping, mold and the growth of mildew.

Flood Cleanup

The Refrigerator

The second area to remain vigilant for water damage in the kitchen is the refrigerator.  Your refrigerator can cause leaks by either having a leaking or malfunctioning hose connection to a water supply if the refrigerator has an ice maker.  If the line freezes, then you may have an issue if it bursts.  Also, refrigerators that have the freezers on the bottom have to carefully watched and defrosted on a regular basis in order to prevent ice build up which can thaw and spread water under and behind your refrigerator.

The Dishwasher

The final area to watch for water damage in a kitchen is in the area of the dishwasher.  Like the refrigerator, the dishwasher is an appliance that is heavy, but it can also obstruct the visible signs of water damage.  Remember, the dishwasher has a large amount of water that flows through it per cycle.  You should check your hoses and seals of the dishwasher on a regular basis to watch for leaks.  An unattended dishwasher can leak gallons of water in the kitchen.  Be attentive to this appliance.

Upkeep

In any home, the kitchen can be a place where you create value and memories.  It can also be a place that requires tremendous upkeep.  The best that homeowners can do is make sure that their appliances are always in a working order.  Check for leaks on a regular basis, and fix when a leak is found.  If you take care of your kitchen, then it will add the value to your home that you expect.
