The Dangers of Hiking in Rain

Rainfall

Sometimes it rains and you don’t want to cancel your hiking plans so you go anyway. This can be dangerous and without proper planning can end in you or your hiking companions getting injured. The following are some tips for properly hiking when it rains outside.

Waterproofing

Make sure that you use waterproof clothing such as raincoats and other gear that will allow rain to slide off of you instead of soaking into your clothing. Once your clothing gets wet it will often stay wet. This will subject your body to colder temperatures and increase your chances of coming down with an illness. If you only have a bag that isn’t waterproof, you can use a garbage bag as a liner so that the insides don’t get wet. In waterproof clothing it is important that it has some form of ventilation so that you can let heat and moisture escape.

Bring Layers

In warmer climates it may be nice to walk in the rain without a lot of gear on. However, if the weather changes or the sun starts to set you can become cold quickly. Put some more layers on such as sweatshirts and other clothing to keep your body heat in. If it is still somewhat warm out you’re going to want to hike at a slower pace so that you don’t overheat.

Taking Breaks

If you’re hiking in the rain, breaks become an important time to regroup and store up some energy. If the rain lets up, use this time as a break. During your break make sure to eat and drink to replace anything you’ve burnt off during your hike. This is also a good time to get anything out of your bags that you may need but don’t want to get wet.

Keep Your Feet Dry

Rain pants are an important item in preventing water from finding its way into your shoes. They will direct the water past your legs and over the outside of your boots. Making sure that you also have waterproof boots that are designed for the climate that you are hiking in is important. They need to have enough traction so that they won’t slip on rocks that are wet from the rain.

Wet Socks

Make sure to pack dry socks so that if you are hiking for an extended period of time you can exchange them with your wet ones. Wet socks can cause a variety of foot problems including various foot fungi and blisters. If you have a break in the weather where it is dry you will want to take off your wet socks and hang them from a tree branch so that they can begin to dry in the sun. When you get ready to start hiking put them in a plastic bag so they won’t get the other things in your bag wet.

Rock Slides

The risk of a rock slide or even land side are extremely high during the rain. Water loosens the mountains and mud making the land more likely to slide out from underneath you. This is never something you can predict as there are many factors that could be added to the problem to make it more likely. Your own body weight might be the very thing that piece of land needed to fall. Take extra precaution by trying to stick to roads and not venturing off on new trails. Or you can take the even safer route of waiting till the rains ends and the land has time to dry.

What is Sewage?

Frozen toilet bowl

Soooooooooooo you don’t know what sewage is well, I’ll make it easy for you.

No worries this will only take a few minutes, really I timed it. Sewage simply put is; water that
carries waste. This causes extreme and heavily priced water damage. No beating around the
bush here you will get straight up water damage.

The sewage contains all your filth and unwanted nastiness out of the community. Don’t say you’re not dirty I’m not pointing fingers here we all are ok just you, I was trying to be nice. Hate to get mathematical here but sewage is
actually 99.9% pure water, that’s almost 100% if you didn’t know. Depending on where it
comes from waste water can either be labeled sanitary, industrial or surface run offs.
This “sewage” as society properly calls it causes water damage. Sanitary sewage you may be
wondering ummmmm what is that? well, let me tell you that is all the water from washing food, doing laundry well you get the idea.

How does sewage affect us?

That is a good question. Well, sewage causes  several health problems and water damage. First off sewage causes pathogenic organisms which can transmit diseases to humans and other animals. Therefore it’s not just affecting you but also your cute little furry friends. Look at those eyes just telling you, “this place smells and you want
me to eat my food in a bowl on the floor, I thought we were friends, I mean you did let me
cuddle with you last night.” The sewage contains organic matter which can cause water damage
to your home. Not to mention the hazardous toxicants from that awful smell of sewage. Yup
that’s right folks it smells horrendous. This sewage causes water damage. The amount of water
damage to one’s home due to the sewage causes blockages to the homes pipes. Wait did I
mention it stinks?

How To Clean sewage?

First and foremost one of the absolute most important things to do is to not panic because
this is a stressful time so take a deep breath…. Meditate, do some Thai chi whatever you have to
do to relax, in fact I’ll do it with you here we go
mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm….hhhummmmmmmmmmm, ok let’s get started.

Don’t hit the bottle just yet you have work to do. Alright now we can get started. Don’t get into contact
directly with your skin, wear some goggles, rubber gloves and rubber boots you know common
sense stuff, to clean the sewage and water damage. Then asses the water damage caused by the
smelly sewage. As with any other type of water damage one must remove all furniture, rugs and
anything else that can be removed. Throw away any carpet or rugs that are just saturated with
sewage. Use mild soap and hot water to clean the water damage. Replace the drywall and clean
furniture and appliances with some bleach. When you are done throw away all the material used
to clean and open up all the windows and breathe again because you are done. It wasn’t easy but
we did it together, well mostly just me telling you, but hey I was there in spirit. Ok now you can
celebrate and drink up. Oh and for you nondrinkers maybe drink a juice box.

Removing Smoke Smell from your Home

If an apartment or home has either had a fire or an occupant who smoked indoors, the smell of the smoke can linger in the area for years after.  In order to remove the smells, it is important to understand what smoke is and how it can linger in your home.Smoke in the most basic form is an abundance of particles in the air from the burning of a substance in the area.  Whether it is from burning incense or a fire that gutting the building, the smoke created it from the chemical reaction that occurs when the fire moves through the materials being burned.  As such, it is very similar to an odorous dust that can accumulate from the quality of the fire or duration of exposure.  This smoke can get into your clothes, various fabrics of the house, carpets etc.  They are very difficult to wash out, and this is why even after doing laundry, the smell can linger in your clothes.

So, how do you get rid of the smell?  First off, when smoke is present, you need to create positive pressure to get it out as soon as possible.  This means that instead of opening a window and placing a fan pointing out, you need to think in the opposite.  Creating positive pressure would be closing all the windows in the home, opening a door with a large fan pointing inside towards the smoke.  On the other end of the room, open a window.  As fresh air is moved into the room, it accumulates creating positive pressure and pushing the smoke through the open window.  As you finish in a room, be sure to close a door in order to prevent smoke from undoing your work.Once the rooms have been properly aired out, then it is time to remove blinds and drapes for a thorough cleaning.  Try to place outside for drying to give a better chance for smoke to dissipate.

You will want to make sure that all surfaces are cleaned.  Use a solution of one gallon water, a tsp of dish soap and a half cup of white vinegar.  Use a clean rag, and make sure to rinse the rag regularly.  Be sure to wipe down all surfaces with this solution for best results.  Wash all window screens with this solution. When cleaning carpets, you will want to use a vacuum with a HEPA filter that will prevent the smoke particles from blowing right back into the room.  Remove as much of the debris as possible.  Be complete and detailed in your vacuuming.  There are no prizes for going too fast.  Take your time, and make sure you do a good job.

Make sure that light fixtures, cabinets are cleaned with the solution, but also be sure to repeatedly mop non-carpeted areas of the floor. The thing to remember is that you will not get this done in one cleaning, particularly as it takes time for the smoke debris to settle.  Several cleanings will be needed until the smell is completely out of the home.Is the smoke bad for you?  Exposure to this is never good.  Like secondhand smoke, lingering smoke particles can increase risk of cardiovascular issues, but also contribute to breathing and respiratory complications, particularly among the elderly and young.  It is always a good thing to do your best and have the particles removed thoroughly and cleanly.

What to Do When Your Sewer Line Clogs

Situation Degraded

Clogs in sewer lines can remain undiscovered for long periods of time, while still causing a lot of damage to a home. Many homeowners already understand the purpose of sewer lines in their homes. Even with this knowledge, many sewer lines go unchecked for long periods of time. This allows the necessary time for a clog to develop.

What Happens?

When your sewer line is backed up it can lead to raw sewage coming back out of drains in your home. This can lead to lots of damage to the home and require sewer line repair or replacement to fix the problem at its root. Understanding what to look for in the case of a sewer clog is important in stopping the problem before it gets worse.

What to Look For

If any of your drains in the home or toilets are backing up or you hear a gurgling sound in your drains, it’s a sign that you have a clog in your sewage line. If any appliances are connected to the water line, you will notice weird noises coming from other connected rooms. There is one main branch that has many smaller branches coming off of it. If there is a clog in the main one, you will notice problems starting to occur in the rest of them.

Causes of Sewage Line Clogs

Many homeowners are surprised to discover that the ultimate cause of their sewage clog is a tree root. Tree roots work their way through broken drains, sometimes even crushing them completely. If you notice that your drains flow slowly it is commonly because of tree roots. Some other causes of clogged sewage lines are flushed hygiene products, paper towels, and thick toilet papers.

What to Do?

If you notice the symptoms of a sewage line clog, call Water Damage Zone (Los Angeles, CA), at (877) 520-1923 to get professionals out to your home right now. It is important to begin work immediately since a clogged sewage line can continue to cause more damage to your home.

Humidifiers are a Breeding Ground for Mold

If you regularly use a humidifier you should know that if it’s not properly cared for it can be a breeding ground for mold. By following a few steps on a regular basis you can keep your humidifier clean and remove any existing mold spores from it. Even if you do not suffer from severe mold or dust mite allergies, you may want to know that anybody can develop a lung condition from dirty humidifiers. This condition is known as humidifier lung or hypersensitivity pneumonitis. Keep your humidifier clean at all times to avoid developing health problems.

Empty and Clean

Every day you should empty out the water reservoir of your humidifier in the sink. Then, you should rinse it out with hot, soapy water. Don’t allow any water to get into the motor of the humidifier. Also, ensure that you’re not overfilling the reservoir when filling it up for use. Humidifiers can be a great tool for those who are suffering from breathing problems, but if they’re not cleaned routinely they become dirty and bacteria filled.

Clean with Vinegar

Every week you can follow the cleaning routine above but, instead of stopping there you will clean with some vinegar. Add 2 cups of white vinegar and water to fill the reservoir to a normal level. Run the humidifier with the vinegar mixture for 30 minutes in an open area. This will help the humidifier to remain clean and mold-free for longer.

Properly Maintain

Keep the area around your humidifier dry. Remember that it will raise the humidity in your home, which allows mold to grow quickly and aggressively. If you start to notice mold developing in areas of your home, cease use of the humidifier and clean the mold. If you find that the mold has spread to a large area or may be hidden, call professionals like Water Damage Zone to inspect and treat the area.

Health Risks Associated with Sewage Exposure

Situation Degraded

Standing water and or Sewage Exposure is a huge health hazard. Water starts off by accumulating in areas such as construction sites or in potholes in neglected roadway pavement. This water attracts things such as fungi, viruses and parasites. Then the water travels into sewers and remains stagnant for long periods of time. This is how something begins completely clean until collecting in places such as sewers where viruses, bacteria and parasites start to grow. Eventually, if allowed to sit too long, these contaminants will produce health problems in the people exposed to the sewage site.

Health Problems

Sewage contains many hazards, ranging from a variety of gases including methane and hydrogen sulfide, both highly poisonous to human beings. These gases are a result of chemical reactions that take place within the sewage. If inhaled they begin to cause many health complications ranging from heart disease to muscular disorders.

The major diseases caused from exposure to sewage are malaria, hookworm infection, gastroenteritis, trachoma, diarrhea and hepatitis. However, by taking small steps, these deadly diseases can be avoided. The following are four precautionary measures to take against sewage exposure:

1. Wash your hands thoroughly, before and after using the washroom.

2. Wash your hands before and after eating.

3. Make sure that there is no stagnant water in places that you spend a lot of time.

4. Wear a protective mask while cleaning up garbage or around the home.
By following these four tips you can ensure that you and your family remain safe from diseases and harmful substances.
