Small Leaks Lead to Big Problems

Pretend that you are walking around your home, going about your daily routine when you hear a faint dripping in the background. You try to discover where it’s coming from but to no avail. You check all of the faucets in the home in all of the bathrooms. Even though you’ve checked every room you can’t seem to find it. Eventually, you walk towards the wall next to your bathroom. You put your ear up to it and hear the dripping from within the wall. This is a common occurrence in homes that need some maintenance and shows just how easily a leak can be overlooked and allowed to continue for long periods of time. Well, these leaks may seem small but they cause big problems.

Mold

One of the first things that you should be concerned with is mold. Mold can easily begin to grow from a small leak in your home. The more hidden the leak is, the more likely there is to be mold growth because you won’t be able to see it. Remember, mold likes moist damp places to grow in. It will quickly take hold in these areas and begin to spread throughout the home.

Damage to Drywall

Water will also degrade your drywall. Once it has made contact with the drywall it will begin to absorb into it. Drywall is not water resistant so it will continue absorbing the water which will cause it to morph and degrade until it is in need of replacement. This is why it is important to detect leaks and fix them quickly.

Electrical Wiring Havoc

Any electrical wires or outlets that come into contact with water will become damaged and dangerous for those living in the home. The moisture from a leak is all that is needed for the electrical wiring in your home to go crazy. Water will also flow in your home because of gravity and this will inevitably lead it to places like outlets and wires that you don’t want it to reach.

Structural Destruction

Water will also soak into the structure of your home. This includes the foundation and the flooring. Over time these things will begin to warp and discolor, creating the need for massive overhauls and repairs in order to restore the home to its original condition. Water is also harder to detect in these areas because like inside of your walls, it is hidden from your view.

Pests

Hidden water leaks in your home will also undoubtedly provide pests with the moisture that they need to survive. They will use the water for hydration and also may build their nests around it because it is usually in a hard to see area. Once pests have found a home they will continue to wreak havoc on yours until you find them and eradicate them. Even then, it will be hard to keep them out unless you fix the source of the problem, the leak in your home.

How to Save Water in Continued Southern California Drought

Water dripping from faucet

Southern California has been in a drought for a long time and residents have accepted dealing with it as a way of life. So the problem of water shortage isn’t going away any time soon. It’s time to get smarter about how you conserve water. Here’s some tips for saving water in case you forgot.

Stop Watering Grass

Over half of water use in people’s home occurs outdoors on their lawns. Lawns will use about 57 inches of rain every year, while most lawns in Los Angeles only get 15 inches a year. By replacing your lawn with alternative substrates that don’t require water, you will save a lot of money on water as well as protecting the environment. If you really can’t part with your grass, there are more water friendly varieties that don’t consume as much. Succulents are especially good for landscaping because they barely need any water to grow.

Conserving in the Bathroom

Most homes in California use about 192 gallons of water every day. One way to combat this is to take shorter showers. Aim for about 5 minutes, if you can do this one thing every day it will add up. Also, turn off the faucet while you’re brushing your teeth or shaving. Fixing worn washers in dripping faucets will also save you about 350 gallons of water every month.

Cleaning and Saving Water

Instead of using a hose to clean off your driveway and sidewalks, try using a broom instead. This will save you a bunch of water. Installing a more water efficient washing machine will save you plenty of water as well as cleaning your clothing better. Soak your pots and pans before scrubbing them so the water doesn’t have to run while you clean.

Be Conscious

Pay attention when you turn water on anywhere in your home and don’t let it continue to run for a long period of time. This will make you more conscious of how much water you are using. If the water seems like it’s running for a long time, then there is probably something that you can do to speed the process up or do some of the task without using water. Saving water is not only important to our environment but also to your water bill.

Pouring Grease in Your Sink Damages Your Drains

If you cook any foods with high fat on your stove, like bacon, then you are often left with a greasy residue in the pan when you’re done. These fats are liquid when hot but turn solid when they return to room temperature. When you keep pouring them down the drain they eventually solidify and clog your pipes up.

How Grease Damages

When the grease goes down the drain it is able to slide some of the way down. As it goes down it starts to solidify. Eventually, if you keep doing this the grease will completely coat the insides of your pipes. When this happens it’s only a matter of time before something completely clogs the pipe so that water can’t flow through it. Getting a drain properly fixed may be costly but it will be far less money than dealing with a water damage disaster because your pipes have burst.

Emergency Drain Repair

If you have just poured a little grease down your drain and you don’t know what to do, don’t worry. All you have to do is heat up a pot of boiling water and pour it down your drain. This helps to liquefy the grease so it can flow out of the pipe. Other things that can help with this are baking soda and vinegar that not only break down grease, but eliminate odors.

How to Tell if Your Drain is Clogged with Grease

Your drain is most likely clogged if your sink is draining slowly, has a gurgling sound, or a bad smell that won’t go away. If boiling water doesn’t solve your problem, it’s time to call water damage professionals who can replace your damaged pipes. It is important to consistently clean your drains with boiling water so that they don’t clog and overflow.

Is Your Home Ready for the Summer?

shingling house roof

With summer approaching many of us are excited to go to the beach and other fun destinations. Something that’s probably not on your mind is how heat can damage your home in the summer. Once certain systems in the home are damaged it can really take a beating on your energy usage as your home tries to compensate.

Aging Roofs

Heat in the summer time moves through the attic to the roof. This heat will begin to age your shingled roof. One way of alleviating the buildup of heat in the attic is to install vents in your roof. Other things such as power vents will actively push hot air out of your home.

Restoring Roll Roofs

If your home has roll roofs, these too become damage by the sun over time. Typically, you can just use a roof coating to repaint the roof to seal any cracks and restore oil to it. With roofing like this you need to make sure that you maintain it so that it will last you for a longer amount of time.

Wood and Paint

Any kind of wood will begin to dry out and take damage from the sun. Finishes and paint jobs will begin to wear off and peel away. It is important to redo any paint jobs or finishes on your home before the summer. This way your home will be ready and able to take on longer, hotter days. Any paint or finish that you use should be UV resistant so that it will protect materials from the sun.

Humidity

Let’s not forget about humidity. Even with summer being hot and dry, there are areas of your home that produce moisture. When the hot air hits this moisture it begins to raise the humidity level in your home. Be sure to cover any cold pipes with insulation jackets so that moisture doesn’t build up on them. If certain rooms become excessively humid you should purchase a dehumidifier and leave it on in the room on hot days.

Cleaning and Preventing Mold on Children’s Bath Toys

Most kids play with toys in the bathtub. These toys end up in all sorts of places, especially in their mouths. The problem here is that a lot of bath toys begin to develop mold after only a few uses if they aren’t clean. One of the most notorious of these toys is the rubber ducky. The hole allows for water to go inside and sit in the toy. As the water sits inside, mold is allowed to begin growing. Here are a few tips for keeping your children’s bath toys clean.

Seal Any Holes

If there are any holes where water can enter the toys, you can count on the fact that they will begin to develop mold. The best way to deal with this problem is to somehow seal the hole so that water can no longer enter and exit the toy. The best way to do this is with a little hot glue right on top of the hole.

Bleach Them

Just fill a bucket with bleach and water mixed together and then place the toys into the bucket. After they have soaked for several hours you can take them out and rinse them with water. Then sit them somewhere warm and allow to air dry. They should be clean and mold free now.

Boil Them

If your toys have holes in them that may have allowed some mold inside the best thing to do is boil them. By boiling them in hot water you will kill any mold that is present. When they begin to cool off you can squeeze out any mold that may have been lurking inside.

Use the Dishwasher

Putting bath toys in the dishwasher will do the same thing as the above tips. It will sanitize the toys and help you remove any mold that could be growing inside of the toy.

By following these tips, you will prevent your children from coming into contact with dangerous mold. If you notice a toy that is particularly hard to clean or if it has lots of mold growing in it, you should just toss it. It’s better to protect your children from mold then save a few dollars on some bath toys.

What To Do Before A Flood Happens

Flooding waters

Beyond getting flood insurance for your home, there are other things that you can do to prevent damage from happening to it in the event of a flood. By preparing for a flood before it happens, you and your family can prevent the situation from becoming dangerous. The following are some major points to consider when protecting yourself from flood damage.

Check That Prevention Methods Are Working

This just means to check that your sump pump is working and that it has some form of battery power if the main power is shut off. Clear out your gutters so that water can flow off of your property the way it is designed to. Make sure that any electrical outlets are a foot above the home’s projected flood elevation. All of your appliances must be at least a foot above the projected flood elevation as well. Move all of your important documents and valuables to a safe spot in your home.

Keep Important Documents Filed

By creating a folder for all the information related to your belongings and keep it in a safe alongside your insurance policy. Also make sure that you have your agents contact information so that you can call them in the event of a flood emergency. In order to back up your insurance claims you will need to have a written and visual record of all your possessions. Include the serial numbers on appliances and store receipts for all major appliances and electronics. Have appraisal documents for things such as jewelry or art. Finance records and receipts will help you in filing claims to get money back towards your destroyed or damaged possessions.

Devise A Family Emergency Plan

First make a safety kit that includes clean water, first aid supplies, blankets, a flashlight, radio, and nonperishable food. Have a spot for all emergency numbers to be located next to the phone. Plan a route out of your home if it begins to flood and practice it with everyone in the home. By knowing how the land around your home floods, you can figure out where high ground is so that you can stay safe. Don’t forget to include things in your plan like pets or one important bag to grab before you leave your house.

Product Recall for Mold: Gerber Baby Food

92506277

Gerber has recently recalled pouches of baby food because they may be contaminated with mold. According to the company, an issue with the packaging of the products allows for the contents to go bad while shipping them.

The specific items being recalled are the Organic 2nd Foods Pears, Carrots & Peas that expire July 12-13 of 2016 and also the Organic 2nd Foods Carrots, Apples & Mangoes that expire July 13-14 of 2016.

If the food in the pouches looks bloated or smells bad, do not eat it. Instead call the company at 800-706-0556 for more information and coupons. Gerber has released an apology and is working to get back all of the spoiled product.
This is similar to the recall of GoGo Squeez, which happened last month. Inspection agents found residue in the GoGo Squeez factory that led them to believe that mold contamination was possible in the product line.

Gerber was purchased by Nestle in 2007 and is still under their ownership and direction. If you ever purchase a product that you believe to have mold always call the company and never eat the item. Moldy food can spread mold to your home as well as causing the same symptoms as mold growing in your house.
