Small Leaks Lead to Big Problems

Pretend that you are walking around your home, going about your daily routine when you hear a faint dripping in the background. You try to discover where it’s coming from but to no avail. You check all of the faucets in the home in all of the bathrooms. Even though you’ve checked every room you can’t seem to find it. Eventually, you walk towards the wall next to your bathroom. You put your ear up to it and hear the dripping from within the wall. This is a common occurrence in homes that need some maintenance and shows just how easily a leak can be overlooked and allowed to continue for long periods of time. Well, these leaks may seem small but they cause big problems.

Mold

One of the first things that you should be concerned with is mold. Mold can easily begin to grow from a small leak in your home. The more hidden the leak is, the more likely there is to be mold growth because you won’t be able to see it. Remember, mold likes moist damp places to grow in. It will quickly take hold in these areas and begin to spread throughout the home.

Damage to Drywall

Water will also degrade your drywall. Once it has made contact with the drywall it will begin to absorb into it. Drywall is not water resistant so it will continue absorbing the water which will cause it to morph and degrade until it is in need of replacement. This is why it is important to detect leaks and fix them quickly.

Electrical Wiring Havoc

Any electrical wires or outlets that come into contact with water will become damaged and dangerous for those living in the home. The moisture from a leak is all that is needed for the electrical wiring in your home to go crazy. Water will also flow in your home because of gravity and this will inevitably lead it to places like outlets and wires that you don’t want it to reach.

Structural Destruction

Water will also soak into the structure of your home. This includes the foundation and the flooring. Over time these things will begin to warp and discolor, creating the need for massive overhauls and repairs in order to restore the home to its original condition. Water is also harder to detect in these areas because like inside of your walls, it is hidden from your view.

Pests

Hidden water leaks in your home will also undoubtedly provide pests with the moisture that they need to survive. They will use the water for hydration and also may build their nests around it because it is usually in a hard to see area. Once pests have found a home they will continue to wreak havoc on yours until you find them and eradicate them. Even then, it will be hard to keep them out unless you fix the source of the problem, the leak in your home.

Black Mold- Health Risks

There are several kinds and types of mold that can be divided into several categories and sub-categories. Black mold, also known as Stachybotrys chartarum, is one of the most common species. It is not only toxic, but also causes several problems related to skin and the respiratory system. However, not all mold that is black by appearance is Stachybotrys chartarum. Here are some of the symptoms you may experience if your home has black mold.

Respiratory Problems

The respiratory system is usually one of the first things that will be effected due to breathing in the area of the black mold. The toxic fumes are breathed in and then enter the respiratory system, which immediately leads to difficulty breathing. Major symptoms may include breathlessness, wheezing, coughing, swelling of the lungs, sore throat, bleeding in the lungs, runny nose, itchy nose and nose bleeds.
These symptoms may vary based on the age, and the immune system of the person.

Circulatory Problems

The irritation doesn’t stop at the respiratory system, encountering black mold can also effect the circulatory system if it’s absorbed through breathing or the skin. The toxins in the black mold can find their way into the bloodstream and cause complications such as, heart damage, blood clotting and external or internal hemorrhaging.
If you or someone you know has been in direct contact with black mold, see a doctor if they have any of the following symptoms: irregular heartbeat, heart inflammation, low blood pressure, vomiting of blood, bone marrow disruption and bleeding tendency.
The severity of the symptoms may vary from one person to another, but immediate care should be taken in order to eradicate the chances of further damage to other organs. To ensure safety contact a doctor immediately following the presence of any of the above symptoms in order to minimize damage. The person having these symptoms should be moved to a mold free area, in order for them to be safe from any more damage or difficulties.

Skin Problems

One of the several ways through which mold makes it into the human body is by getting absorbed into the skin. Skin can be highly damaged due to mold. Areas that can get sweaty, like armpits or creases in the skin, have a higher tendency to be effected by black mold.
Symptoms may include, crawling of the skin, dermatitis and jaundice.

Repairing Ceiling Water Damage

When your ceiling sustains water damage, it is important for your health and home to fix the problem immediately. If the water damage remains for too long it will lead to mold and the structure of your home will become weaker. Knowing how to address this problem with save you time and money in the future.

Stop the Leak

The source of the leak needs to be stopped before you can begin any work repairing the home. If the leak isn’t repaired, then any water that enters will undo any repair work you may have made.

Dry the Ceiling

After you have sealed the leak, you can begin to dry off the ceiling with towels and a shop vac. It is important that you clean the ceiling from above and below it. This means the flooring/roofing above where the ceiling is located. If there is a bulge in the ceiling this means that there could be water sitting inside the ceiling. In this case use a bucket and knife to puncture the bulge into the bucket. Allow the area to completely dry.

Remove Damaged Ceiling

Pieces of ceiling may be hanging off or bulging out. This needs to be scraped away and smoothed before repairs can be performed. Any flakes or chips should be scraped off as well. The ceiling should be as flat and smooth as possible.

Sand the Ceiling

Now you are going to need to sand the ceiling so that it can be smoothed even more. Small holes can be filled in with joint compound. For bigger holes, you will need to use drywall and plaster to repair them. After these repairs have dried you will need to sand them down so that they are level with the rest of the ceiling.

Paint

Now that you are done with the repairs and everything has dried, you are ready to paint. First apply a coat of primer to the ceiling. After this you will need to let the primer dry and then apply a coat of paint. The best way to do this is to completely paint your whole ceiling so that the color matches and there aren’t any spots.

Removing and Preventing Carpet Mold

Moldy carpets are smelly and unsightly. Not only that but it’s extremely hard to completely remove mold from carpets. Removing moisture from carpeting is just the beginning of removing any mold that has grown on it. It has been found true that carpets with dirt in them are far more likely to have mold growth. The following are some tips and precautions for preventing and eliminating mold growth in your carpets.

Humidity and Temperature

One of the best things you can do to prevent mold growth in your carpets is to keep the humidity in your home low as well as the temperature. By doing this you are creating an environment that is unfavorable for mold growth. You can reduce your home’s humidity by installing a dehumidifier in the room that is affected. By keeping your thermostat low, you will also prevent the temperatures in your home from being too high and encouraging the growth of mold.

Clean Your Carpet

When you spill something on the carpet, clean it up. Doing this as well as vacuuming on a weekly basis will ensure that the carpets in the home remain clean. Clean carpets don’t grow mold as easily as carpets that have dirt and spills on them. By maintaining the cleanliness of your home you also prevent mold from growing in unnoticeable places.

Organic Isn’t the Answer

There is a lot of talk in the news about how much healthier organic products are for us. While this may be true of foods, it is certainly not true of carpeting. Organic carpet made out of materials such as wool, houses mold much easier than a synthetic carpet. This is because mold can actively break down organic compounds in things like wool and use them for food. In order to best protect your carpets from mold make sure they are made from synthetic materials.

Have you ever had mold in your home’s carpet? What did you do to get rid of it?

Preventing Carpet Mold After Water Damage

1465221_861912287264538_1266903830108836957_n

Finding mold in your carpet isn’t a pleasant experience and it may return even after you remove it. Carpet is one of the hardest things to get mold out of because of the porousness of the material. One of the main ways that mold begins to form in carpet is after it becomes water damaged. Any water sitting on the carpet for a prolonged period of time will allow it to start growing mold. In this post we’re going to focus on ways to prevent your carpet from growing mold after water damage.

Quickly Dry Carpets

Any carpets that sustain water damage need to be dried as quickly as possible. Use a wet/dry vacuum to suck up all of the water from inside of the carpet. If you don’t know anyone who owns one, you can easily rent one from a hardware store. The more quickly you dry carpeting, the less time mold has to begin to grow. Use fans in addition to vacuuming to speed up the drying process.

Get A Dehumidifier

If you have rooms in your home where the humidity levels are high, you’re going to want to invest in a good dehumidifier. This will prevent the room from becoming excessively humid and allowing mold to grow in your carpet. The better climate control that you have in a room, the more quickly you can dry it out and prevent mold from having the conditions that it needs to grow.

Replace Carpet Padding

If simply cleaning your carpet doesn’t work, the carpet padding may need to be replaced. Replacing just the padding will save you money and prevent mold from growing. Just make sure that the carpet is properly steam cleaned and dried. In addition to this you will want to sanitize your walls and baseboards in the home so that they don’t transfer mold spores to your carpet. Check other furniture in the home to ensure that it isn’t wet or growing mold.

Keep Your Home Dry

By ventilating your home and keeping it dry you will prevent yourself from having to deal with mold problems. These tips should help to give you a starting point when dealing with wet carpeting so you can prevent the situation from turning into a mold problem. The main thing to focus on when keeping mold out of your carpets is keeping them clean and dry by vacuuming them regularly and airing out your home.

Can I Test for Mold Myself?

Many people ask themselves this question when the first begin to wonder if their home has mold or not. The answer is, yes, you can test for mold in your home on your own with a testing kit. These kits are somewhat effective in diagnosing a mold situation in your home by yourself. If you’re wondering where you can find one, just look to your local home improvement store or online. Just be aware that these kits will not test for every kind of mold that exists.

What are Popular Brands?

First Alert

First Alert has inexpensive kits that can test 9 different areas in your home and can tell you if there is mold or not. If you want to know specifics like type of mold, you will need to send in samples to a lab so that they can analyze them. This would be an additional charge and is not always reliable. Many people who buy these kits claim that it takes a long time to receive results and that it’s not worth the money.

IAQ

IAQ is another brand that has a low price kit that tests for 32 different types of mold including black mold. You will receive your results quickly and in your own home. It will only test one area for mold so if you need to test multiple, you will need to buy more kits. This can be pricey and often doesn’t make sense if you’re going to have to pay to remove the mold as well.

Mold Armor

One of the best low cost kits that you can get, Mold Armor, is capable of determining whether mold is present or not. For specific results you will have to send a sample to the lab in order to determine the type of mold. As usual, this service comes at an extra charge. This kit is a little bit better than the other two but still has some of the same problems of taking too long and requiring more money if you need to test other areas.

Just Get a Professional

Most consumers aren’t pleased with the level of quality of DIY Mold Test Kits that they have bought to use on their homes. It is much more practical to hire a local mold remediation company to come and test your home. The results will be precise, quick and scientific. Professionals know exactly where to test for mold and how to test to get the best result. These results also won’t take long to get back to you. Companies like Water Damage Zone are certified in mold remediation and not only can test your home for mold but provide a way to quickly remove the troublesome mold from your home for good.

5 Signs Your House Has Mold!!

mold_removalIt may be hard to see the mold in your home. Even if your house has mold, you may not be able to actually see where it is growing. There are some signs though that will make it easier to determine whether or not you have a mold problem. Check for the following symptoms in your home in order to decide whether you need to have a mold inspection done.

1. Water Stains

One major sign that you have mold in your home is the occurrence of water stains on ceilings, walls, and floors. If you see water stains then it is likely that water is collecting and sitting in your home. This allows mold spores to begin to grow and spread.

2. Rust

Rust on metal in the home, especially in basements indicates that there is a moisture problem. When the moisture levels rise to the point where rust is occurring, there is a likelihood that mold is also forming. If you see rust you should also check for some of the other signs of mold.

3. Standing Water

A major indicator of mold is standing water. Never, ever leave standing water in or around your home. This breeds all sorts of bacteria and viruses as well as mold spores. They use the water as a breeding ground to collect in and spread from.

4. Condensation

If you see condensation collecting on surfaces in your home, it is possible that mold could be feeding off of it and growing beyond eyesight. Condensation is one of the major leading factors in the beginning of mold growth. Beware of any condensation and where it is coming from. By eliminating the source you can potentially prevent a severe mold problem.

5. Humidity

Purchase a hygrometer for your home; this will help you to determine the levels of humidity in each room. By figuring this out you can determine where trouble areas may be and purchase devices like dehumidifiers to correct the humidity level in certain areas of the home. This is important in keeping the environment from becoming a breeding ground for mold.
