Proper use and cleaning of a Humidifier

There are many benefits to using a humidifier in your home.  They can help relieve sinus infections, helps to recover from colds and flus faster.  Humidifiers can help keep the air from being too dry resulting in nose bleeds.  It can help alleviate snoring and it keeps your skin looking great.

With all the benefits of using a humidifier, would you know how to keep your humidifier running and clean?  It is very important to make sure that your humidifier is running at its best in order to prevent it from actually harming your home.

With the water inside a humidifier, it can grow bacteria and mold like any water source.  If this water is allowed to sit in the humidifier for extended periods, then next time you use your humidifier, you might not only be spreading beneficial moisture around the home, but harmful bacteria and mold as well.  These bacterium and molds can result in allergies and sickness.  Just what the humidifier is trying to help you overcome.

In order to prevent this from happening to your humidifier, there are some simple steps to follow.  The first step is to clean the filter of the humidifier.  Unplug the humidifier and remove the filter.  Hold under a faucet and rinse to wash away any grime that might be present.  Leave the filter to dry.  Now you can clean the rest of the unit.  It is important to remember, don’t use cleaning solutions on the filter as these can damage the filter.  Most humidifiers require you to change the filter.  Follow the manufacturer’s instructions on the frequency for change.

The next step to clean the unit is to clean the water tank.  Remove the tank from the unit, and pour out all the old water.  Next, fill the tank with 2 cups of vinegar, and swish this around.  Make sure that it covers all points of the inside of the tank.  Vinegar acts as a solvent, and it loosens the grime in the water tank.  Rinse the tank thoroughly when you are done.  You may want to use a scrub brush to get the tough points of grime.  Stick with the vinegar as any other cleaning agent can stick to the tank, and it can be pumped into the air when the unit is in use.

Finally, use a damp sponge with a vinegar and water mixture to wipe out the rest of the humidifier.  This simple step will prohibit dust from entering the tank.  If you keep the dust out of the humidifier, then mold and bacteria have nothing to ‘feed’ upon to help grow.

There are many ways to clean out a humidifier, but this step is simple, and it is good for the environment.  If you take care of your humidifier, then your humidifier will take care of you.  Clean it regularly, and it will become one of your most trusted appliances.

Don’t DELAY Water Damage Cleanup! why?

scale of a House fully flooded during the flooding of the river

Water damage can be caused due to several reasons and can occur at any instance. A blockage in the gutter, a pipe burst, a ceiling leakage and in worst scenario a flood, are few of the several issues that one can be a victim of. There is not much one can do in order to prevent this from happening, but you can certainly make sure that the damages caused by this are kept to the minimal amount.

Besides, the amplification of costs, it can also cause health problems including headaches, asthma, lung and respiratory problems. Mold is a kind of fungi and can easily spread in damp situations once they grow within the walls. Water damages spread towards a larger scale if proper care is not taken against it immediately. Mold can spread around the whole property if proper measures are not taken against them.

The most ideal situation is to avail the services of a mold remediation company, the trained professionals can help in cleaning the home effectively and efficiently which can keep the mold from causing damage to the air ducts and carpets.

Is Mold Toxic

When we hear the word “mold” we have initial fears of our well-being and that of our families as well.  It is necessary to take these fears seriously, but is mold really toxic?  It seems that due to recent studies that they potentially are not.

According to the CDC, molds themselves are not inherently toxic.  Certain molds can produce toxic substances called mycotoxins, yet many molds are neither toxic nor poisonous.  However this doesn’t mean that mold is not a serious issue.

Mold is always present.  It exists inside home and office buildings alike.  It can be found in the air we breath and on the surfaces of items we are consistently in contact with, yet there are few reports to say that mold is responsible for rare health issues such as memory loss.

The effects of mold that most commonly found in people are in the infections and complications in the upper respiratory tract systems.  These issues can be presented in the form of a cough, wheezing in light cases, and move up towards asthma in the more extreme cases.  People who have a sensitivity to allergies find that they have the most issues with the presence of mold.

Just because there are no links to toxicity for mold it does not mean that mold should be taken lightly.  For people who are sensitive to mold, it can be a very unbearable existence as nasal issues, irritation, wheezing and skin irritation can all be manifest with the issues of mold.  In more extreme cases, there may be fever and shortness of breath.  At the worst, people can routinely develop fungal infections in the lungs that will require medical attention.

If you find mold in your home, then you should take every precaution and step to clean up the mold in order to limit your personal exposure to the effects, but also your family as well.  In many cases, the mold can be a simple clean up using water and bleach.  Under no circumstances, never mix bleach with ammonia as this creates toxic fumes more harmful than the mold.

If you find that the potential issue is extensive or you just want to be sure you are finished with the situation, it would be best to bring in a reputable mold remediation company to assess your situation.  This company would be able to identify and suggest a course of action that could limit and eliminate the effects of mold in your home.

Cons to Delaying Mold Removal

If you find that you have mold present in your home, it is in your best interest to remove it as soon as possible.  There are many different reasons from the integrity of the home to the health risks.  It is a serious issue that demands a serious response from you.

There are multiple issues with allowing mold to remain in your home.  These range from wall discoloring to ceiling stains to increases in allergens present in the home.  By looking at several of the issues, you can judge for yourself the necessity of removing the mold.

First and foremost, the major issues with mold come from the adverse effects that it can have on your home.  Remember that in most cases, mold forms from unchecked or unknown moisture being present that feeds a mold colony.  Because of this it is imperative that before you make any restorations in your home that you identify the cause of the leaks and fix them immediately.  Only in this way will you prevent the mold from returning and ruining all the hard work and money that went into the repairs.  It is important to get it right the first time.

When you are ready to begin repairs, it is important that one of the biggest issues with mold is the combination that it has with moisture in the home.  Water can create a great deal of damage, so you will be repairing mold but also water damage.  Once cleanup is ready to begin, then it is necessary to begin removing items that were either contaminated by mold or soaked with water.  This is done to prevent future mold growth.

The issues that mold can create in homes include discoloration or stains on the walls, cracked/peeling paint, loosening drywall, ceiling stains and it can warp the wood in the home.  If your home has plaster, then this can begin to crumble as well.  It is necessary that once the source of the moisture has been dealt with then repairs can begin.  In many cases, you will want to check the integrity of the area affected by the water or mold.  If you are fortunate, then there may only be a need for some fresh paint after the area has been thoroughly cleaned.  Drywall, for instance can become very similar to mush when wet, so these sections may need to be replaced, then you can finish with paint.

Work in bathrooms can be a little trickier as these areas of the house has a constant moisture present from use.  Here you need to make sure that the tubs and sinks are caulked properly to prevent water seepage.  Once this is done and the walls are verified for durability, then new paint or tile can be applied to give the room new life.  If you choose paint over tile, it is recommended that a paint resistant to moisture be applied.

Mold can also affect the air qualities in a home.  Molds reproduce by spores, so it is important to make sure that the HVAC system of your home is cleaned, but also supported by a fresh air filter every 2-3 months.  If you find that you are constantly running your AC or heat, you may wish to change sooner.  If you have pets, this could be a beneficial practice as pet hair travels easily through the HVAC, and it isn’t until you change the filter that you understand how much your pets affect the air quality in your home.

Air filters should be chosen along their HEPA recommendations.  If you fit the categorization to have a stronger filter, then by all means get the most aggressive filter possible.  This will not only filter out the mold spores, but it will filter out other allergens as well making your home more pleasant.

Mold is a very serious issue, and it should be dealt with as soon as possible.  If you delay, then you run the risk of damage to your home and health.  If you suspect that you have mold growth present, call a professional mold removal service to assess your home and suggest plans to help you enjoy your home once again.
