Current El Nino Hits Record for Stranded Marine Life

This year Southern California has already seen record numbers of sea lion pups that wash ashore due to El Nino. Many other types of marine life are being affected and washing ashore during these difficult times. When marine life ends up on shore it is often injured or malnourished and looking for food or shelter. Some people are even finding marine life farther from the beach, on porches and lawns.

Sea Lions

Warming temperatures in the water off of the California coast have also led to an increase in the amounts of sea lions that are washing up on beaches. Sea lions are more intelligent than other types of marine life and they will wander away from beaches in search of dry shelter. This is why people are finding them around their homes, on roadways, and other populated areas.

Fur Seals

Fur seals have already been washing ashore in record numbers as of 2015 and this is expected to continue along with El Nino. They are an endangered species and natural events like El Nino threaten their survival. It is important to remember that if you see one of these animals it is most likely unhealthy and afraid of you.

Warming Waters

In addition to El Nino, the warming waters of the Pacific Ocean on the West coast are causing more animals to wash ashore than normal. The condition of warmer water is causing the ecosystem of these animals to change and now they have to look in other areas for food and shelter. Unfortunately, many of these areas are not what they are used to. It is important to keep an eye out for these animals as they can be near death and unable to survive without intervention.

What to do with Stranded Marine Life

1. Do not touch the animal or attempt to give it food or water.
2. Do not push the animal back into the water.
3. Stay a distance of 50 feet away and watch the animal.
4. Be able to explain what the animal looks like, its color, size and health.
5. Figure out the exact location of the animal.
6. If you are in California call: 1-866-767-6114 to report a stranded animal. Otherwise look up the number for your area to report stranded marine life by clicking on this link: http://www.nmfs.noaa.gov/pr/health/mmume/events.html

Hidden Mold in your Washing Machine

Many new, front-loading washing machines have been found to grow hidden mold inside of them. This can cause your clothing to become horribly smelly and for bacteria to begin growing inside of the machine and on your belongings. Many customers are upset over models that were bought until the late 2000’s that allow mold to grow hidden inside of them. Not only is this a dangerous situation for your health, but it also leaves all of your clothes with a bad smell you can’t get rid of. These machines are in the homes of many who may not even realize that there is mold inside of them.

Front-Loader Washing Machines

A front-loader is a washing machine where the cover opens on the front of the machine as opposed to the top. On top-loaders the moisture rises out of the top of the machine, helping prevent moisture from accumulating inside. However, on front-loaders the environment in the machine remains airtight so that moisture stays inside. This combined with the humidity creates a breeding ground for mold.

Can I Still Use My Front-Loader?

Don’t fear, if you have a front-loader washing machine there are things you can do to prevent it from getting foul-smelling and moldy. Here are some tips on keeping your machine clean and mold-free:

1. Leave the door open when you’re not using it so it can dry out. (Be careful that kids and pets can’t climb inside.)

2. Run a bleach cycle through the machine regularly, at least twice a month. This will help to clean the machine and kill any mold that may be lingering inside.

3. Wipe down your entire machine, inside and out, with a dry towel so that any excess moisture isn’t allowed to sit overnight.

4. Choose low-sudsing detergents made for high efficiency washing machines. A lot of times the powder detergents will work well too.

How Dangerous is Inhaling Mold Spores?

water-damage-flood

Mold is found in many different areas all over the planet. One thing that is true of all mold is that it needs moisture and organic food in order to grow. While these fungi are feeding on the surface of what they are growing on, they release toxic spores into the air around them. When humans or other animals inhale or come into contact with these spores, they cause various symptoms and health complications.

Skin Reactions

Inhaling or making contact with mold spores is also known to give people skin rashes or dermatitis. Besides rashes that are irritating to the skin, you may also have burning eyes, nose, throat and lungs. Mold can even cause Athlete’s foot or yeast infection. If you notice any of these symptoms getting worse, it is a sign that you are continually being exposed to the mold spores and need to temporarily relocate until the problem is remediated.

Allergies

When you breathe in mold it can cause allergies to flare up as well as asthma. Beware if you notice sneezing, nausea, coughing, watery and itchy eyes, trouble breathing or headaches. If you have one or more of these symptoms it is a warning sign that there could be mold in your home or workplace. If you normally have allergies but they are worsened, this is a sign that you have mold. Mold will exacerbate any allergies and asthma that you would normally have.

water_damageImmune System Disorders

Normally the human body is able to fight off foreign germs and other particles easily. However, when you are continually exposed to mold your immune system will get weaker over time. If your body is overwhelmed with mold spores, you will most likely experience a respiratory infection. Once your immune system has been compromised it will be even harder to fight off any additional bacteria in your environment.

Organ Damage

In more dangerous types of mold there will be mycotoxins present. These typically grow in environments with dead plant materials and other organic waste. They are also known to grow indoors in water damaged buildings that have leaky pipes or lots of humidity. Researchers are still investigating the health impact that mold exposure has. It is acknowledged to have a role in cancer, liver and nervous system damage.

The Dangers of Hiking in Rain

Photos.com

Sometimes it rains and you don’t want to cancel your hiking plans so you go anyway. This can be dangerous and without proper planning can end in you or your hiking companions getting injured. The following are some tips for properly hiking when it rains outside.

Waterproofing

Make sure that you use waterproof clothing such as raincoats and other gear that will allow rain to slide off of you instead of soaking into your clothing. Once your clothing gets wet it will often stay wet. This will subject your body to colder temperatures and increase your chances of coming down with an illness. If you only have a bag that isn’t waterproof, you can use a garbage bag as a liner so that the insides don’t get wet. In waterproof clothing it is important that it has some form of ventilation so that you can let heat and moisture escape.

Bring Layers

In warmer climates it may be nice to walk in the rain without a lot of gear on. However, if the weather changes or the sun starts to set you can become cold quickly. Put some more layers on such as sweatshirts and other clothing to keep your body heat in. If it is still somewhat warm out you’re going to want to hike at a slower pace so that you don’t overheat.

Taking Breaks

If you’re hiking in the rain, breaks become an important time to regroup and store up some energy. If the rain lets up, use this time as a break. During your break make sure to eat and drink to replace anything you’ve burnt off during your hike. This is also a good time to get anything out of your bags that you may need but don’t want to get wet.

Keep Your Feet Dry

Rain pants are an important item in preventing water from finding its way into your shoes. They will direct the water past your legs and over the outside of your boots. Making sure that you also have waterproof boots that are designed for the climate that you are hiking in is important. They need to have enough traction so that they won’t slip on rocks that are wet from the rain.

Wet Socks

Make sure to pack dry socks so that if you are hiking for an extended period of time you can exchange them with your wet ones. Wet socks can cause a variety of foot problems including various foot fungi and blisters. If you have a break in the weather where it is dry you will want to take off your wet socks and hang them from a tree branch so that they can begin to dry in the sun. When you get ready to start hiking put them in a plastic bag so they won’t get the other things in your bag wet.

Rock Slides

The risk of a rock slide or even land side are extremely high during the rain. Water loosens the mountains and mud making the land more likely to slide out from underneath you. This is never something you can predict as there are many factors that could be added to the problem to make it more likely. Your own body weight might be the very thing that piece of land needed to fall. Take extra precaution by trying to stick to roads and not venturing off on new trails. Or you can take the even safer route of waiting till the rains ends and the land has time to dry. IMG_8491
