The Differences Between Moss and Mold

Moss and mold both can have a similar appearance but are entirely different from one another. Both are types of fungus that survive in moist, humid conditions where there is little light. They grow on porous materials that are made from organic materials. Some items you may find moss or mold on are: wood, fabric, paper, drywall, insulation, food, etc.

The main way to tell them apart is by their appearance.

Moss is a plant that needs sunlight and soil to grow in the environment. It is a fungus that is related to mushrooms that uses decaying organic matter to produce its energy. Moss needs sunlight but mold does not.

Mold

Mold can be black, yellow, or green and have a fuzzy or slimy texture. Mold growth can appear to be moss or plant-like and eats away at whatever it is growing on. Certain strains are extremely toxic for people living in close proximity to them. This is because as mold grows it continues to spread poisonous spores into the air. Exposure to these spores can cause skin irritation, eye irritation, shortness of breath, high fevers, and other allergic reactions.

Places You Find Moss and Mold

Both tend to grow in areas like kitchens, bathrooms, basements, crawl spaces, attics, and garages. These areas can present conditions that allow both to persist even after they have been removed.

What To Do When You Discover Mold

Stay away from the area where you discovered the mold. It could be a type that is extremely toxic to your health. Call professionals to come and inspect the home to find out if there is more mold growing that you are unaware of. They will have the area professionally inspected and remove the mold from all areas of the home.

How To Prevent Mold Growth

Use a dehumidifier to allow air to circulate in your home in order to keep the areas dry so that mold doesn’t have the necessary conditions for growth. Rooms where mold grows easily such as bathrooms and kitchens should be cleaned thoroughly and well with disinfectants.

How Heaters can cause Mold In Winter

Winter is a time where it is cold and dry outside for most people. What many don’t realize is that heaters inside of homes provide the optimal conditions for mold growth during the winter season. Mold needs a source of water and a source of food, organic materials, in order to live. Mold likes to grow on any surface where water may sit for a long period of time. Homes get mold because of leaks, floods, clogged pipes, bad air circulation, and high humidity.

Prevention of Mold

Heaters in the home can be managed so that they don’t create situations where mold gets out of control. Making sure that these systems are operating correctly ensures that these scenarios don’t occur in your home. If you see water accumulating on your walls, then you should look into getting a dehumidifier. A dehumidifier will ensure that your home stays dry in areas where mold loves to grow.

Ensuring Proper Air Circulation

By opening up windows during the day and turning fans on around the house, you can make sure that all of the home receives fresh air. This will prevent mold spores from building up in certain locations and beginning to grow. Make sure that the air is dry though, rainy weather can add moisture to the air that will make it more humid.

Keep Track of Your Home’s Humidity

You can easily keep track of the humidity inside of your home by buying a moisture meter at a local hardware store. The EPA recommends that you keep the humidity in your home between 30% and 60%. You will be able to determine the likeliness of mold growth in a room by measuring the humidity. If it is above 60%, the chances of mold growing go up significantly. Also look for the accumulation of moisture in areas that have pipes or windows.

5 Steps to Prevent El Niño Damage

If you live in Southern California then you are already feeling the effects of El Niño this year. Since Southern Californians don’t have to regularly deal with rain they are often unprepared when it does come. Setting up your home to properly drain water and keep it out are the first step in avoiding damage to your home. Follow these 5 steps in order to prevent water damage to your home:

90387665

1. Check your home for any places where rain could leak in from outside. Places to check are any joints, these areas allow water inside of your home when not properly fixed. Getting licensed professionals to check for leaks is the best way to prevent them from occurring.

2. Remove any debris from gutters outside of the home. While it’s dry outside, we don’t notice how much builds up in our gutters. It’s only until it starts to rain that people realize how clogged their gutters are. Make sure that your gutters are all safely secured and connected so that they properly drain.

3. Paint any exposed areas on the outside of your home where the paint has worn or come off. This will prevent any exposed materials from getting wet and creating dry rot or allowing termites inside.

4. Look at the caulking around all of the window panes in the home. Caulking degrades over time and loosens around the glass panes in a window. There will be gaps where rain can enter the home through the caulking. Properly replacing old caulking on windows will prevent this from happening.

5. Ensure that all drains are functioning properly. Check all of the drains in and outside of your home to make sure they work. If any drains are clogged they present opportunities for your home to flood in the event of heavy rain.
