10 things to do while waiting for a technician from Water Damage Zone to arrive on site:

By following these tips our technicians are able to arrive and get straight to work, while further preserving your home and contents.

  • Disconnect or unplug. All electrical sources and appliances should be shut off in order to prevent electrocution or shock along with making sure to shut off main water valve, gas, and electric completely, to reduce damage. Only do this, if you know where to locate the main water valve, main gas line and electrical panel. Be sure you are not in standing water when disconnecting any electrical sources.
  • Keep all exposed furniture dry. Placing either plastic or aluminum foil underneath the legs of larger furniture that is heavy and hard to move, this will help keep the furniture from becoming saturated with water or contaminants.
  • Be careful where you walk. Try to seal off the areas that have been exposed to any mold, sewage or flood water. This way you do not further track the contaminants into other areas of your home. If you do have to go into this area, place plastic over your shoes. Make sure before you leave to place your shoes in a plastic bag.
  • Move saturated items. If you have any items such as clothing, bedding, curtains or small rugs that have been completely saturated with water, move them into the bath tub, large containers, the garage or outside in the backyard or equivalent. This way the items are out-of-the-way and will dry out quicker.
  • Discard items exposed to sewage or mold. Be sure to toss out anything that has been exposed to sewage and mold damage, mainly for health reasons. If you are not sure, ask one of our experienced technicians. They will be able to determine whether or not the item is recoverable. Any children’s toys or wooden and plastic utensils are not easily sterilized and should not be kept.
  • Store personal records in your freezer. If you have any personal paperwork, books and pictures that have been damaged by water, place the items into Ziploc plastic bags sealed. Doing this can help in preventing further damage until one of Water Damage Zones technicians are able to begin working on them.
  • Keep windows and doors shut. Opening the windows and doors may do more damage by allowing more moisture inside then its releasing. Ask one of our Water Damage Zone technicians what they advise you to do in order to prevent more moisture and damage from occurring.
  • Move any of your floor length curtains. Keep them off the floor using the old “wrap and knot method” or by using a coat hanger to lift the curtains off the floor, simply hook the coat hanger on to the curtain rod. This will aide in drying out the part that has been exposed to water along with preventing further damage.
  • Wipe down, mop up, open and move. Any excess water off of furniture to get rid of excess moisture to decrease drying time. Try to mop up as much water as you can to help decrease the level of further extensive damage to your property. Open all the drawers, cabinets, and closets to help dry out faster and decrease drying time. Prop up wet furniture cushions for level drying.
  • Take notes and research about the water damage process. Water Damage Zone has many useful articles on how to prevent water damage, mold damage, restoration/repairs and other helpful tips and tricks.  Keep in mind that the sooner you call the less damage you are likely to be left dealing with. It only takes 24-48 hours for mold to begin growing depending on the type of environment.
